Book Description

The unforgettably stirring wartime tale of passion, heartbreak and tragedy from the bestselling author of A Scent of Lavender and The Willow Pool.

From love springs tragedy, from tragedy comes hope…

It is 1931 and Rowangarth, Yorkshire is a rural arcadia for sewing-maid Alice Hawthorn and young gamekeeper Tom Dwerryhouse. For Julia Sutton, daughter of Alice's employer, it is also a time of unfolding love for the handsome doctor, Andrew MacMalcolm. But with the outbreak of war their lives will be changed for ever…

As Tom and Andrew volunteer to fight for King and Empire so too do Alice and Julia as VAD nurses on the Western Front. All find trials that will test them – and their love – to the limit as passion and hope are tempered by heartbreak and sorrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll Bring You Buttercups 3 May 2006
Format:Paperback
This is the best book I have ever read, just can't put it down. I have only just discovered Elizabeth Elgin and this is the third book of hers that I have read. I can't wait to read the follow up books about the Sutton family and all the other books that she has written, do hope she decides to write more books set in the war, just brilliant stories and I feel I am there with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Bargain! 16 Nov. 2013
By Lou Lou
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't believe it when I stumbled across this Elizabeth Elgin book for free in the Kindle store. Especially because of its length and the quality of writing.

I'll Bring You Buttercups is the 1st book in a series about the genteel Sutton family and their servants in the run up to and during the First World War. It reminds me a lot of Downton Abbey... I read all of the books in the series in paperback several years ago, and loved each one. The descriptions and characters completely charmed me and although some of the language is perhaps a little bit cheesy at times, all in all the story of the Sutton family is a wonderful one, filled with love and tragedy.

I'm so happy to have found this for my Kindle, and for free to boot! I'm loving reading it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent spellbinding read!! 15 Nov. 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book paints a vivid picture of life at the start of the 20th century and during the first world war. Throughout the book I felt that I was there and could imagine the scenes which the words painted. A wonderful storyline which means that you can't put the book down. I heartily recommend this to romantic and hard headed people alike. The way that the relationships and personalities interact does make you think about how you as an individual treat others and your effect on them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely! 8 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really, really enjoyed this book. When I downloaded it, I was pleased by how long the book seemed to be - and long it was! By the end I felt attached to Alice and Julia and didn't want it to end - thank god the book is part of a series!

This book really worked out for me as I am a commuter in London, and walk through Hyde Park every day - I found myself imagining where Julia and Andrew met, silly I know, but Elgin is so descriptive with her story that it almost feels real. I'd read on the train and wish my commute was just a little longer so I could finish the next chapter!

Some may find the story slightly slow-moving, maybe a little repetitive - this was fine for me as I was so into it, but if you're wanting a fast-paced story this is probably not for you.

Something I really enjoyed was the war-time hospital scenes, they really gave me a gritty insight to what hell soldiers went through. It is a tear-jerker, but full of love and happy times too.

Can't wait to download the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars ... 16 Aug. 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is one of the best I have ever read. It was a real eye-opener for me, and gave me great respect for the men and women of that era. I have already read the next three in the series, and I reccomend them to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, compelling - a good light read 15 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
this story is the first in a series of four which follows the fortunes of Daisy Hawthorn, a young sewing maid, and the aristocratic Sutton family, from the beginning of the century to the end of the first world war. Although the characters are fictitious the background information is historically accurate. I couldn't put it down and am already reading the next in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Long book for storyline! 29 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Liked the actual storyline although could have guessed most of it! Too much flowery descriptions in places for my liking but others may like this type of thing.
