'I'll Be Lightning' is the debut album from Australia-born,New Zealand raised Liam Finn. Recorded at his father, Crowded House's Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios in Auckland, and produced and played by himself, the album's cheery indie pop takes influence from the likes of Elliot Smith and Ben Folds while drawing on his father's classic songwriting skills.

About the Artist
Originally from New Zealand but having lived in London for many years, Liam Finn's dramatic and compelling live show came to life in London in 2001. The twenty-four-year-old New Zealand native writes, produces and engineers his own music, adhering to a strict DIY creative process, shooting his own publicity photos and album artwork. In addition to meticulously overseeing the recording of his debut album I'll Be Lightning, Finn plays nearly every instrument on the album, a responsibility he doesn't relinquish during his now mythic live gigs.

As one might assume, a Liam Finn show is by no means the seated, shh-inducing coffee house affair many solo singer-songwriter performances can be. It's actually the antithesis. Finn drops fuzzed out guitar riffs, bellows bass lines and thunders on his drum kit like a punk rock caveman. When asked the philosophy behind this approach Liam remarks, "Whenever I walk in and see just a guy and a guitar, I think `Here we go again.' I want to give people something different."

Well i must say that this is a really fantastic album. from pounding fuzz riffs to mellow gentle melodies Liam Finn has created an album to be proud of. We have to remember this music is coming from a 24 year old who has played basically all instruments on the album as well as engineering it. The single Better to Be is a super opener to the album, along with songs like ill be lightening, gather to the chapel and the upbeat music moves my feet. You definitley wouldn't see James Morrison or anyone in around Finns age group writing so many emotionally charged songs. May it continue!

I can't wait to hear this album in it's entirety. I have heard a few songs from it and it's obvious that Liam has inherited his brilliant dad's talents (Crowded House/Neil Finn)
Liam's voice is an exact mix of his dad's and uncle Tim's.
Although comparison is inevitable I don't want this to be purely a review based on that. Liam is young and has a clear intelligence which shines through in the sensitive lyrics of his songs. He is obviously not afraid to play as many instruments as he can manage and to experiment in order to get the sound he wants.
Hopefully this will be the first of many solo albums and the beginning of a career as long and successful as the older Finn generation. Who knows maybe one day there will be a father/son collaboration too, what could be better?

I had a feeling that this would be a good album after seeing him on an Irish show playing "better to be" (the opening track) on an irish telivision show. Unfortunatly this song is the best on the album in my opinion.

I was dissapointed all round and found the songs became very similar in sound as the album progressed.

but hey what do I know! Its just my opinion!
