Product Description

Product Description

Homer's two epics of the ancient world, The Iliad & The Odyssey, tell stories as riveting today as when they were written between the eighth and ninth century B.C. The Iliad, which tells of the siege of Troy by the Greeks, is an unforgettable tale of nations at war and of the courage and compassion heroic soldiers show upon the field of battle. The Odyssey is the story of the Greek hero Odysseus and the many marvels and challenges he encounters during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War. This edition employs Samuel Butler's classic translations of both texts. The Iliad & The Odyssey is part of Barnes & Noble s series of quality leatherbound volumes. Each title in the series presents a classic work in an attractively designed edition bound in durable bonded leather. These books make elegant additions to any home library.

About the Author

Ancient Greek poet Homer established the gold standard for heroic quests and sweeping journeys with his pair of classic epic poems, although very little is known about him. He has fascinated scholars for centuries and there is much disagreement about where he was from and when The Odyssey and The Iliad were written. There is no doubt, however, that these two poems form one of the foundations of Western literature.

Impressive 14 Jan 2011
Format:Bonded Leather
Really good quality, better than it looks in the picture. Bit heavy though so not great for bedtime reading or travelling. The literature itself is a pretty modern translation which makes it easier to read than some editions.

Looks Amazing!!! 10 Aug 2011
By Bart
Format:Bonded Leather
This book looks absolutely amazing, though its not really a reading copy - its too heavy and not handy - personally I would prefer reading penquin paperback. It will do as a present or if you collect books and think of them in terms of decoration.

What I do not like about this book is that its translated and displayed on pages like a novel rather than epic.
Nonetheless Butlers translation is good quality and pleasant to read.

I recommend this to anyone (although if you have never before read Homer's work, you want to read it and you dont care about the cover - penquin paperback will be much better for you)!

I would go for Butler's translation mainly because of his invocation to Illiad which i believe became famous in english more than any other version

'Sign, O goddess, the anger of Achilles, son of peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Acheans!'

Marvellous! This one sentence and beautiful cover make the book worth its price!

Classic buy 30 Dec 2011
By Yvonne
Format:Bonded Leather
This book will make a wonderful addition to my shelves of books. It is finished to a very high standard with gold edges to pages and looks very expensive. A very good buy.
