I read this book in the middle of winter and found that it completely transported my senses to a different climate and a different time. It was a fantastic read and the characters were engrossing. It seems to be a love story, but it's not just that. Because it is set in the Middle East during a time of political unrest and instability a lot of the book can be related to what is happening in the Middle East today.
I felt after reading it, that I was more informed and could understand a little of the background behind conflicts in present day Iraq and the tension between countries in this region. The relationships between the characters keep you on your toes without being confusing and the definite element of suspense keeps you reading wherever you might be, lunch break at work, a long journey, though it kept me hooked and reading constantly for several days, until I'd finished it.
It makes a huge change from the range of drab and depressing fiction centered on the lives of people living in North London.
I sternly recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all and come back feeling a little more educated, without having to leave their own home. Definitely worth reading, and apparently there will be a sequel for anyone as addicted as I was!
