Product Description

War drama starring Tom Selleck. The D-Day invasion - the largest military operation of World War II and the beginning of the end - marked Dwight 'Ike' Eisenhower (Selleck) as one of America's most powerful military leaders. This film follows the 90 terrifying days leading up to the invasion as Eisenhower decides the fates of thousands of soldiers while managing complex strategic relationships with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Ian Mune), American General George S. Patton (Gerald McRaney), Britain's Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery (Bruce Phillips) and French President Charles de Gaulle (George Shevtsov). It was a time of no guarantees and certainly no second chances. In this climate, one man, Dwight Eisenhower, pulled the World's leaders together for one of history's most infamous battles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exposing the meticulous planning behind D-Day 3 July 2005
By m.bison
Format:DVD
Dwight D. Eisenhower (a hard to recognise, bald Tom Selleck), Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during World War Two, had the unenviable task of strategically planning and green-lighting the D-Day invasion. Encountering such legends as Churchill and the eccentric General Patton on the way, 'Ike: Countdown To D-Day' gives us a workman-like account of all the factors put before Eisenhower before he made his historical decision to authorize the invasion. Selleck is on great form as the big general, agonizing over oddly-critical weather reports and excessive troop depletion reports (at least 7 out of 10 of the soldiers parachuting into the D-Day battle were expected to perish). He humanizes the military man and fills him with a rugged charisma that commands the loyalty of his subordinates and the cannon fodder. Most of all, his composure remains a calming influence as, during the course of the film, D-Day draws closer and closer. As you can probably tell, it's Selleck's film and whether you're a fan of his or merely interested in this film because it deals with WWII, I would highly recommend it either way. It's a solid, character driven film showing with great competency the men in the room and the planning behind the guts, gore, explosions and horror of that Normandy beachfront.

4.0 out of 5 stars A BIT SPECIAL 16 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
The subject of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy has been well covered by films and television over the years but the decisions and drama that led up to that historic event have seldom been covered. This film changes all that, with Tom Selleck giving a superb performance as General Eisenhower Commander -in -Chief and the heavy burden that he to contend with in making the vital decision whether to go or not.His relationships with Winston Churchill ,General De Gaull , Montgomery ,Patten and other Top Brass I found to be revealing and entertaining stuff. It captured how the atmosphere must have felt at the time when our fate lay in the hands of one man who just had to get it right first time or ????? . This film is for me the best of its kind ,well acted and very convincing a pleasure to watch if you at all interested in the 11 .World War.

Very interesting story on the lead up and decision for when to do the landing for D-day. Amazing how nature is the factor in many of the decisions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very biased
This otherwise interesting and well acted film was spoilt for me by so unashamedly portraying Eisenhower and his American staff as the only real brains behind the invasion. Read more
