Good but short 29 Sep 2005
By Adaz
This game is fun while it lasts, which isn't that long actually.
There are 5 levels each with quite a bit of exploring in them (secret passages and tunnels and that kind of thing) and each has it's own theme, including a zombie infested camp type place and a desert with mummies and man-eating plants. There are lots of vehicles and weapons aswell like subs, tanks, flamethrowers and shotguns. There are four characters to choose from: Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio, but not much of a storyline since theres no talking. When you complete the story mode theres still the storming the mothership mode and chubby island modes to keep you going, but after you've done them and repeated the arcade missions on multiplayer a few more times thats about it, although it is fun to have a quick go on now and again. The Graphics are improved a bit but still as you would expect them to be. I don't think theres anyone that doesn't enjoy a bit of 2D shooting now and then though.

Brilliant arcade fun. 5 April 2007
Fun:
I was loafing through the Supermarket one day and I happened to cross paths with this budget game on the shelf for just £3. Nostalgia took me over for a short time before I quickly purchased the game and started my crazy campaign with Marco and the gang. This game is a 2d arcade game with twists and turns at every stop. It was great fun blasting my way through countless Zombies and hacking GM plants to death but the creme de la creme of this game is the 2 player option. Playing this with a friend is just ultimate fun and makes it 5x more enjoyable. As for its shortness, well you have to remember this was an arcade game which cost money for every "game over" and since my least "game overs" in one round is 18: you can understand how this game feels short to those with endless lives. (play the game and count how many £1 you would have spend in the arcade to get those countless lives after every "game over"). It really does deserve every star it gets! Shows graphics are not the only important thing in a game.

The answer to the question posed above is yes, and this game perfectly represents that. Fans of the series will know the tried and tested formula: shoot and kill and shoot some more. It's pretty much second nature in our modern society.

Anyway, as with the rest of the series the animation is fantastic: crisp and smooth, with plenty of claret and random green fluids adding a nice bit of colour to your environment. I still think the arcade versions look a bit nicer, but it is still very good.

As for the game's difficulty, I think it's just right. You can alter how many lives you have, and, somewhat bizzarely, you have an infinite number of continues. This does, however, ensure that frustration is kept to a minimum.

The gameplay itself is also fantastic, however I don't think the PS2's controller does the game justice: the arcade version just, for me, felt better. Killing massive armies of random soldiers is just as fun as it ever was, probably the most satisfying things to kill being zombies and mummies (all your favourite enemies are here, from aliens to ice men).

In terms of length, the main game is actually very quick to finish off (but the final level does go on a bit...). You can replay the missions in the game's level select, but all in all it is fairly short-lived. Added bonuses come in trying to better your score and also two secret modes: Fat Island (where your character is trying to put on as much weight as possible) and a mode where you play as one of the long-suffering soldiers. The latter in particular is very good, especially in the way that you can call upon the big bulging bloke with the machine gun to shoot down some aliens. Don't expect to last long, though- these guys are wimps, but working with all the troops that follow you around is pretty fun, even if you can't really order them around or anything.

2-player is of course available, and is as good as ever, adding slightly to the enjoyment factor.

So in conclusion, if you like old-fashioned, retro, no-brainer 2D shootery where you drive around in elephants killing extras from the Little Shop of Horrors, buy this game. But if you're a "cool", gun-toting 'wick gangsta and are "down with da kidz", to coin a street saying, and hate retro games, only playing your beloved annual Fifa installments and all that other EA tripe, steer clear: quality game ahoy!
