Amazon.co.uk Review

With a brace of new collaborators drawn from his Brian Setzer Orchestra, the bequiffed riffmeister returns to the three-piece rockabilly format that made him a star in the mid-70s with 2001's Ignition. Essentially, this is the Stray Cats re-born, except that Setzer has narrowed his lyric concerns down to hot-rodding and all its attendant delights. What's remarkable is that, perhaps because Setzer's entire career has been founded on re-treading musical genres long past their sell-by dates, there's no sense of selling out. Setzer comes across as a man who was born twenty years too late, genuinely loves what he's doing and gives not a hoot whether it's fashionable. His guitar playing has, if anything, become more energised, better focused and faster with the passage of the years, and anybody who can write a song called "Who Would Love This Car But Me?", clearly has not just a solid grasp of the genre but an admirable line in self-deprecating humour. In the course of the album, Setzer doo-wops sweetly in "Dreamsville", summons up a totally convincing country-style yodel in "8-Track" and closes proceedings by re-vamping Ernesto Lecuona's "Malaguena" into a Tex-Mex rockabilly stormer that would have sounded great on the soundtrack of From Dusk Til Dawn. --Johnny Black

Amazing 27 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
Rockabilly for the new millennium as guitar god Setzer returns to his roots. Don't expect a Stray Cats revival though - this is far more grown up. Pedal to the metal hotrod tunes, country rockers, a dash of psychobilly neurosis... it is all here!

With a solid backing from Orchestra cohorts Mark Winchester and Bernie Dresel, this should totally revitalise the sound of modern rockabilly - as he did in the 80s with the Cats.

OK, so Rockabilly is after all suppose to be countryfied Rock n Roll, well this album admittedly has a fast country flavour to it, but it's also saturated in full throtle Rockabilly! Pulsating i should say! From the second you here the manic speed of the title song you just know you're in for a hell of a ride. This record is just Brian, Mark and Bernie no Orchestra but they don't half kick up a storm! I don't entirly agree with Amazon general reviewer who says that the album faulters on ''59'. That song is indeed about Brian and i personally feel it's one that highlights this amazing record.'Who would love this car' is another, and perhaps the very best track is a surprise - the instrumental 'Malaguena' which is frantic in places but also slow and thoughtful, spanish and mexican in here. 'Hellbent' must be brilliant live for the amazing guitar, but the lyrics on this album are also second to none. '5 years, 4 months, 3 days' is also a classic for me although that is very country. It's not your Dolly Parton country it's more exciting than that! 'Santa Rosa Rita' has a spanish flavour to it, it's a good track not specatular. 'Get them on the ropes' is like Punk with proper words and a tune! 'Blue Cafe' is pure Rockabilly. 'Dreamville' is a sleepy slow ballard that somehow sounds 'big' although there's only the trio playing. 'The Legend of Johnny Kool' is like a follow up to 'Johnny Kool' from the Brian Setzer Orchestra's 'Guitar Slinger', faster but not quite as good. 'Rooster Rock' is sung by Mark Winchester on here (the '68's bassitt) it's cool. This cd is just that, very very cool, it's for driving fast to, listening to that scorching gee-tar and singing along with the finest cat out there! It's a 5 star number, but you'll also want some Stray Cats and BSO in your collection because every Setzer record is different and destinctive in a good way. This is way better than 'Nitro Burnin' Funny Daddy' and Setzer's latest effort 'Wolfgang's big night out'. Add it to your collection now!
