First of all, let me say that I'm perfectly happy with the kettle. It's faster than my previous one and looks fairly stylish and has a decent build quality feel to it. The lid is slightly sticky to open but that doesn't bother me much. It's an improvement on my previous Morphy Richards, which whilst also fairly cheap, was probably a little more expensive than this one.
The issue lies with the toaster. Again, it looks ok and doesn't have a cheap feel to it, but it's simply too slow. Obviously the issue with it being slow, is not that you have to wait for it, it's that it dries the bread out by the time the toasting is done.
On the plus side, it does toast very evenly over all four sides.
I can't comment on the control, since the (sliding scale) setting that it came with was a perfect level of toastedness for me, so I haven't touched it.
The set scrapes 3 stars because of the kettle and the overall price is competitive but I can't really recommend the set when I'm already contemplating getting a replacement toaster, after just a few days and even fewer rounds of toast made.
