Not long before Christmas the glass door on our double oven shattered … well to be honest it doesn’t just crack, break and fall to pieces it explodes with a massive bang and chunks of glass flying everywhere – a really terrifying experience.

Since we do limited cooking at the present we have been debating whether or not to replace it with a standard electric double oven or whether to get a small table/counter top oven. When I saw this I knew that it would be perfect for what we need.

The 25 litre oven is large enough to roast a small chicken or joint of meat, the tray can hold 2 medium size pre-prepared or ready meals.

Control of heat is done by turning the top dial. Temperature markings are not complete but are sufficient to cook or reheat food – thermometer has settings for 100, 145, 190 and 230. This isn’t the only down side to the oven – the sides also get quite hot too.

The hot plates warm up quite quickly - just a couple of minutes in reality though it is true that a watched pot never seems to come to the boil.

Of course using a small oven like this means that we cannot do any of the large family meals at Christmas, etc, as we won’t have the facilities anymore … this means that the family will not be able to drop on us without warning and expect to be fed (if they want feeding they will have to nip down to the chippy) … see there is always a bright side to things.

Well, without wishing to sound horrifically out-of-date, I left my wife to test this out. I would have had a go myself at some point or another - if it hadn't proved to be a bit of a disaster for her.

The first problem she encountered was in the setting up. The instructions tell you that you need plenty of space around it because it gets so hot. Fair enough, given that it's an oven. But then they supply you with a lead that's about two foot long. She managed to just about find a space near where the toaster normally sits that complied with the safety parameters and she was off.

Now, she makes nice cakes and cookies my wife. When she told me she'd do a batch of cookies in this as a road test, I was quite excited. So hen I came home that same night to a house that smelled of burnt sugar and still had a slight smokey haze, I knew she'd had trouble.

Basically, this thing burnt her first batch of cookies to a crisp in no time at all. Fair play to it for its power output I suppose but sometimes, less is more. The second batch were equally burnt, despite her adjusting the controls, which ultimately have one setting - a setting which indirectly caused the food bin to catch fire (hence the smoke). Giving it up us a bad job and reasonably confident that the house would not burn down, my wife went off to work and left me to clear up the mess.

There are other issues too. The whole thing gets so hot when running the oven that it's dangerous to even go near it. And when you open the door, it folds all the way down and burns your worktop (as it too gets ridiculously hot). In the right hands, one might just manage to heat up a pizza or something in one of these (and this should take less than a couple of minutes) but for most people you're looking at a burnt dinner (at best) and potential for a trip to A&E and/or B&Q to remedy the damage.

I have to say that I was quite impressed with this little oven, which I found to be reasonably well designed and good value for the price.

Construction is mostly of enamelled metal, with a glass door. It all feels very solid and well put-together. Of course this means it is not light, and you might need a little help to lift it about if you are not a strong person. In size, it is similar to a full-sized microwave.

The oven sits away from the worktop, on little feet, and you need to allow room at the sides for ventilation as there are grilles on either side to allow excess heat to escape. Inside the oven, there are two horizontal bars at top and bottom, which are the elements. There is no cover over these, so they would get splashed by anything spitting under the grill, or dripping onto the bottom.

Controls are simplicity itself. Top and bottom elements are controlled with an on/off switch each, allowing either or both to be used. There is a thermostat to control oven temperature, from 100 to 230 degrees Celsius. The hot plates on the top have only three settings - low, medium or high. These are OK for simple heating/frying, but obviously lack fine control. It is recommended that you do not run both hotplates and oven simultaneously, owing to excessive power drain.

The oven has some neat features. When you open the door, the strong metal handle acts as a stand, nicely holding the door horizontal and away from the worktop. You are provided with a tray which can be used as a baking tray, but can also live permanently just above the bottom element as a drip tray. The door is mostly glass, providing good visibility of the interior.

This is, of course, a small oven.

This is a bulky box, but not surprising when you consider everything you get inside! For a home, it's pretty basic but we took it camping at the weekend and it was great.

We had to take it out of the box, and it took up a large part of the boot, but it was worth it. We always choose a campsite that has electrical hook up as can't go for too long without charging up gadgets (sad but true!) so it was an easy choice to take the Igenix.

We normally take a basic camping gas stove, so this was different in that we could grill toast while make beans for example. The oven was also good for heating up cooked chicken - this is something that had been unable to do previously, but nipped to the supermarket and bought one of the rotisserie chickens and popped in the oven to warm up. Was pretty good on a cold January day!
The hot plates warmed up quite quickly, but were slow to cool down - we found it quicker to just take the pan off the plate for good measure and then to leave standing for a while once off.

Overall it's good value for what you get and it does give you a lot of flexibility. However, it's bulky and heavy for the size so it is a trade off of convenience vs boot space for camping. It's not something that we will use every week however if there is space in the car then it's definitely coming camping with us in the colder months.

Recommended as a limited use product.
