Book Description

When Hugh MacCarrick was a young man he did something very reckless with Jane Weyland, the daughter of his superior. While she merely used him as a summer flirtation to practise her wiles on, he fell in love. This was ill-advised because Hugh's family harboured dangerous secrets and was shadowed by a deadly curse. Even if these obstacles were absent, Hugh knew a woman like Jane - heart-breakingly beautiful, rich, and from a prominent English family - would never marry a Scot with no title or prospects. So, to avoid the impossible temptation to kiss her and the misery of seeing her marry another, he left the country. Now ten years later, Hugh is wealthy, an assassin in Her Majesty's Service, and still secretly in love with Jane. When he receives a missive that her life is in danger and rushes to protect her, will he be able to resist the overwhelming need to make her his? Jane Weyland is furious when her father summons Hugh to London to protect her. Clearly her father has lost his mind, even with his assurances of a speedy annulment when things die down, but why would Hugh agree to this insanity after she all but begged him to say no? How dare he do this to her?Her fury stoked, she decides to torment him just as she had all those years ago with soft touches, whispers and seductive play - that he can do nothing about it without risking marriage to her, a consequence he'd made clear he didn't want. But she soon discovers that Hugh is not the gentle young man he used to be and that toying with the fever-pitched desires of a hardened warrior might get her burned.

5.0 out of 5 stars All I could Desire!!! 19 Jun 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ms Cole has done it again, with the second instalment of her triology about three warrior like brothers (the MacCarrick's). Brillant stuff, passion filled excitement from one page to the next. I just couldn't put this book down.

This tale tells of Hugh, the second eldest brother (and I think the most sensitive and nicest character of the three) of his struggle to overcome his feelings of love and desire for Jane Weyland (the heroine of the piece). For Hugh his feelings for Jane can never be fulfilled due to the fact that his forefathers, father, himself and his brothers have all been cursed by "The Book of Fates": It foretells that the three brothers will never know love or have children and if they try and marry it will end in death to the one they love.

Hugh has been in-love with Jane for many, many, many a year and has fought a very tough and heroic battle trying to keep his hands to himself and by doing so not let Jane's fate end in death. Finally the two are thrown together as Hugh tries to keep Jane safe and out of the reach of a opium taking, delirious, mad man, Grey, who is out for revenage against her father for trying to have him killed.

Hugh and Jane are very deeply attracted to one another and Cole has one passionate and steamy scene after another as Hugh is tempted beyond endurance by the sexy and deliberately provocative Ms Weyland, who doesn't give a toss about his family curse!

A great read, as are all Ms Cole's tales. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars KRESLEY COLE MOULD BREAKER 29 July 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a stand alone novel even though its part of a trilogy. Well worth the read as its unique in the way that its written and neither Hugh or Jane take centre stage. Each one has a strong personality and I loved the way that each expressed thrir feelings but at the same time their thoughts as well (out of direct speech - you know what I mean when you read it). Hugh was a mercenary and had left Jane for a full 10 years & comes back when her life is at risk when summoned by her father. He had always loved Jane but would not commit due to a family curse.
Jane had loved Hugh the minute she clapped eyes on him but he just left her without even the benefit of a good bye. Their initial meeting was fraught with hurt feeling & inuendo. So begins the story with Hugh trying to protect Jane without trying to reveal his feelings. Jane on the other hand reveals feelings despite being rejected tome & time again. How much rejection can one person take before they snap?
She is surrounded by her family & he by his brothers but they drift in & out of the story not to irritate & fill the pages but in a subtle way.
Beautifully handled & well worth a read. I had always avoided KC as I thought that she only wrote paramormal & vampire love stories so this was a pleasant surprise & find. Another one to store on the keepers shelf.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not the best of the trilogy 31 Oct 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read all three books (admittedly in the wrong order, 1,3 then 2) I was disappointed in this second installment. The third edition with Ethan the older brother is much more gripping in comparison. This second book is a nice holiday read, but easy to put down and a bit dull in places. Compared to the Author's Immortal in the Dark range of books (which are highly additive), this one does not stand up in good comparison. It is on par with the 'captain' series the author has published, e.g. "ok. but not as good as the Immortal range".

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read! 29 July 2010
By K. Hall
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I am a fan of Kresley Cole who is one of my favourite authors, and have read loads of her books, especially enjoying her paranormal/vampire writing. I bought this book mistakingly thinking it was another series in that same/similar vein, but quickly realised it was not paranormal at all. Given that I tend to read Urban fantasy, paranormal romance, vampire type novels I thought I would find this series boring, however I was pleasantly suprised. The storyline was good, exciting, and a classic old fashioned love story, but not too 'mushy' and I found I liked the time-line in which it was set which added character to all the installments. Even if you are a fantasy/paranormal romance fan like me, I think you would enjoy this series as Kresley's writing just makes it an endearing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Trilogy, a must read 2 Feb 2010
By Tilly
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like the way KC writes writes the scottish lyke in the IAD series then you'll love these 3 brothers. These books are both witty and passionate with a great back story to go along with them.
I would recommend reading them in order, for obvious reasons Dare, Desire and Deceive.
These cheesy book covers do not do these books justice.

When you read the first book Hugh seems quite sensible and Jane not very nice. There is alot mot more too it than that and both were heart broken from their original time together, feelings are still running very high.
