Red Stewart on The Great American Songbook Volume V

Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Rod Stewart may have begun his career as a respected singer, yet that critical respect eroded as he got older, as he became more concerned with stardom and adult contemporary songcraft than the rock music that launched him. While he has recorded some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart was once rock & roll's best interpretive singer as… Read more in Amazon's Rod Stewart Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

One could get worked up over the fact that If We Fall in Love Tonight is effectively an EP of new songs rounded out by another bunch of coconuts from Roddy's hyper-exploited catalogue. But what's to complain about really? The title track purrs like a Porsche. The ripe cover of the Leo Sayer hit "When I Need You" is vintage fromage. There's a reminder or two from the 1970s that our man's never been anything but an old romantic. --Jeff Bateman

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Collection of Ballads., 5 Dec 2011

This collection of Rod's best loved ballads plus four new tracks was released in 1996. The four new tracks are fabulous and include covers of When I Need You, originaly sung by Leo Sayer and Sometimes When We Touch written and recorded by Dan Hill and covered many times by others. Dont let this put you off though Rod does a fine job vocally and the arrangements on these new songs by Jam and Lewis and the wonderful James Newton Howard are first class.
Other highlights include Downtown Train, First Cut Is The Deepest, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You and the sublime This.
If you prefer Rod's softer side this is the album for you. Very consistent and a lovely listening experiance.
