Given the craze for partying like it's 1982, there's a pleasant inevitability about a compilation such as If I Was Prince. While Beck and Basement Jaxx have blatantly drawn on Prince's amazing musical legacy of late, however, the 10 artists corralled here go one step further. None of these cover versions are exactly faithful, and none of the new artists featured are retro-fixated. Instead, as many of them confirm in the sleeve notes, the appeal lies in how far ahead of its time Prince's sexy, experimental, psychedelic dance music really was. So Broadway Project's take on "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" is a dense and atmospheric wall of samples topped off with vocals from country singer Jeb Loy Nichols. Surprisingly, it sounds terrific. Likewise Simian's electro-baroque "Under the Cherry Moon" and Blue States' classy chill-out re-upholstering of "Alphabet Street". Of course, you'll want to hear the original Prince songs again after this. But unlike many similar tribute albums, If I Was Princeis a stylish homage rather than a crass desecration, and a handy introduction to some of the more talented underground bands and producers around, to boot. Some of today's finest producers from the global underground pay tribute to the magic & influence of Prince with this very off the wall collection of covers. The likes of Peaches, Simian, Blue States, & many more re-invent the originals. If you like labels like Memphis Industries and you like Prince then you have to own this

This is a far superior album to the some of the dross the man himself has produced of late. If you're a Prince Fan have an open mind and expose yourself to how other artists have interpreted the great man's earlier music. It may feel like some of your old favourites have been bastardised but thats the beauty of this album. It's Prince but not as you've heard him before...I never thought a woman could do "The Beautiful ones" but she did and it's a stellar track in a constellation of class!

Oh dear,What have these people done! When I placed this CD into my player I was looking forward to hearing these artists interpretations of Prince's work. All I can say is avoid this CD at all costs! with the exception of Blue States and Hefner,the quality of the musicianship is negligable. Many of the tracks are tunless noise filled reworkings of some classic tracks that sound like a cat being spanked with a banjo. I would personally recommend the far superior 'PURLPE PAIN' or 'PARTY OF THE TIMES' tribute CD's, which are truly interesting in many ways.
