This is the excellent debut album of the seven-piece band formed by Melody Maker poll winners Dick Morrissey (reeds) and Terry Smith (guitar). Great playing and writing blends jazz and rock synergistically, all carried along by J W Hodkinson's unique vocals. This album is a highly recommended starting point with IF - the All Music Guide's description is, for once very accurate. Enjoy it!

I saw Dick Morrisey several timess with Morrissey Mullen and theri series of unfortunate singers, my rationale why they were not much more successful, and I did see Dave Quincey once playing in Edinburgh with Iain Ballantines Semuta, however If are in a class of their own and was a band that should have lasted much longer, they only recorded a handful of albums but here is where they started.

The combination of Morrissey and Quincey, each on both played both Sax and Flute with Terry Smith's Guitar in well arranged track, which leave plenty of space for wonferful improvisation, is just stunning. If you missed If get this and you will want more. If Vol 2 is also brilliant!

Saw this band in 1970, fabulous then, and even better now in re mastered cd version. Just a great album!

Musically, the review for the earlier CD version of this album applies:

"This is the excellent debut album of the seven-piece band formed by Melody Maker poll winners Dick Morrissey (reeds) and Terry Smith (guitar). Great playing and writing blends jazz and rock synergistically, all carried along by J W Hodkinson's unique vocals. This album is a highly recommended starting point with IF - the All Music Guide's description is, for once very accurate. Enjoy it!"

This remastered CD brings a definite improvement in fidelity.
