Like many people, i saw The Saturdays supporting Fascination labelmates Girls Aloud on their amazing Tangled Up Tour and was very impressed. Now, i'm a massive fan of pop music and with 'If This Is Love' The Saturdays have come up with a real winner of a song. Of course, the Girls Aloud comparisons are obvious, (although i think The Saturdays sound more Sugababes-esque) and it'd be fair to say that for the time being they've got a long way to go to matching the feistiness of the UK's premier pop princesses.
So, instead, taking The Saturdays on their own, without comparison, they position themselves in an extremely promising position, this single shooting straight to number 8 in the charts and hopefully marking the beginning of a great career in the world of music. I was overjoyed at how well radio took to this tune, playing it loads in a climate that currently tends to stray away from pure pop music like this. The song's got an ace chorus and the use of the Yazoo sample is brilliant, giving the single a bounce of synth-pop loveliness.
B-side What Am I Gonna Do has a more raw feel to it and if anything sounds even more 80s than the single itself. It's a nice track with just the slightest touch of the melancholy about it, establishing the band as very capable of consistently producing good pop tunes. All this leaves is for us to wait eagerly for the album which, with songs like Keep Her and Up teased live in the band's support slot, promises to be amazing.
