Optimistic heart warming and complex, 29 Nov 2003
The story fits around the lives of three sets of women, each exploring views, attitudes, and feelings about gay relationships. What came through for me, is not just how different the times are in each part, but how varying and individual the characters are. The first section explores the lives of an older couple and demonstrates brilliantly the idea of trust, companionship, and love. It demonstrates with dignity an area of gay film making which is not often presented, especially to such a wide audience. As in every part of the film, it also deals with an issue relevant to the gay community. In this case, it is the battle being fought for equal rights to same sex partners after death. It also deals with the more subtle pains of secrets, lies and an element of shame encountered around the time and indeed to the present day. The second section examines gender issues and explores the never ending issue of the butch/femme stereotype. Again it is linked to the era in which it is set and illustrates a part of lesbian living which is more alive today than ever. The over riding feeling of the film as a whole is that of optimism and, although there are still battles being fought today for same sex couples, the film makers have chosen each part to represent the evolution of the roles of people in the gay community. Especially heart warming is the tale of the couple trying to have a baby and the real emotions they feel towards each other. It shows that in a world that stereotypically involves one night stands and troubled relationships, you can find someone to share your life with regardless of sex. It demonstrates the way many gay people feel about not labelling themselves but wanting to fall in love with a person, not a gender. The first and second segments illustrate more the struggles which gay women have endeavoured, only emphasising further how fantastic the last relationship is. This is such a varying film that it is hard to class, rate, or review because it simply deals with so many issues and ideas. At the end of the day, this is an enjoyable, funny, and slightly experimental film which in some ways has bought the gay comunity together which cant be a bad thing, and it will leave you feeling a strange, heart warming optimism for every relationship.
