Synopsis
Pleased with the success of 1996's initial presentation, HBO gathered another group of successful actresses for IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2. Set in the same suburban house as the original--but with different inhabitants--this made-for-cable trilogy is a dramatic exploration into the lives of three separate lesbian couples in three different moments in history. The first chapter, 1961, tells the somber story of an aging woman (Vanessa Redgrave) who is left facing prejudice and intolerance after the death of her longtime companion. Unable to come to terms with her complex situation, she is forced to suffer alone, confused and distraught. The second installment, 1972, follows a young lesbian college student (Michelle Williams) who falls in love with a masculine woman (Chloe Sevigny). Unfortunately, her feminist friends refuse to accept their union, creating even more turmoil in the young woman's life. The film concludes with 2000, which tells the story of a lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) who are searching for the perfect sperm donor to start a family. Featuring standout performances by Redgrave (who won a Golden Globe for her heartbreaking performance), Sevigny, and Stone, this enlightening made-for-cable drama was nominated for four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars This makes lesbians everywhere feel proud!!, 3 Feb 2003
This is the first in a genre of lesbian films which actually focuses on real issues and depicts lesbians in a favourable light - not as steroetypes but as loving, caring, sensitive people from all walks of life.
It is well written, funny and sad and appealing to everyone, whether straight or gay. It shows that lesbians can be old or young, that we want the same things out of life as everyone else. We want children and express the same concerns as heterosexual people.
I nearly cried when I watched this as I felt relieved that finally something positive has been made about the gay community.
It is a feel-good movie and will appeal to all ages.
What a fab film!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Optimistic heart warming and complex, 29 Nov 2003
The story fits around the lives of three sets of women, each exploring views, attitudes, and feelings about gay relationships. What came through for me, is not just how different the times are in each part, but how varying and individual the characters are.

The first section explores the lives of an older couple and demonstrates brilliantly the idea of trust, companionship, and love. It demonstrates with dignity an area of gay film making which is not often presented, especially to such a wide audience. As in every part of the film, it also deals with an issue relevant to the gay community. In this case, it is the battle being fought for equal rights to same sex partners after death. It also deals with the more subtle pains of secrets, lies and an element of shame encountered around the time and indeed to the present day.

The second section examines gender issues and explores the never ending issue of the butch/femme stereotype. Again it is linked to the era in which it is set and illustrates a part of lesbian living which is more alive today than ever.

The over riding feeling of the film as a whole is that of optimism and, although there are still battles being fought today for same sex couples, the film makers have chosen each part to represent the evolution of the roles of people in the gay community.

Especially heart warming is the tale of the couple trying to have a baby and the real emotions they feel towards each other. It shows that in a world that stereotypically involves one night stands and troubled relationships, you can find someone to share your life with regardless of sex. It demonstrates the way many gay people feel about not labelling themselves but wanting to fall in love with a person, not a gender.

The first and second segments illustrate more the struggles which gay women have endeavoured, only emphasising further how fantastic the last relationship is.

This is such a varying film that it is hard to class, rate, or review because it simply deals with so many issues and ideas. At the end of the day, this is an enjoyable, funny, and slightly experimental film which in some ways has bought the gay comunity together which cant be a bad thing, and it will leave you feeling a strange, heart warming optimism for every relationship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A shame we couldn't see this at our local cinema, 13 Jan 2001
By A Customer
The hype was all about Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres "doing it", but theirs was actually the weakest of the three episodes set in the same house. Vanessa Redgrave, in the 1961 part, is genuinely unmissable as a woman who has to deal with the greedy relatives of her recently departed lifelong lover. "Dignity" was the word that leapt to my mind. The second episode, set ten years later, features the adorable Chloe Sevigny in her first butch role (I'm still scandalised about her not winning an Oscar for Boys Don't Cry) - showing that women's lib and lesbian rights did not necessarily include rights for women who dress like men (and very erotically so...). The third part, then, takes us back to the present: Sharon and Ellen desparately trying to have a baby. It's all about sperm donors, timing and - let's face it - laughs. Although genuinely funny, this lighthearted sitcom episode is an ill match for the other two. Still, the whole package is a delight to watch and crammed with fine performances - I would just recommend watching the episodes in reverse order.
