BBC Review

One of the finest things about Willy Mason's lo-fi, folksy debut (2004's critically acclaimed Where the Humans Eat) was the rawness; the fact that it sounded like it had been recorded in the 18 year-old's bedroom. The stripped-back sound perfectly complimented the simplicity of the melodies, and Willy's shakily endearing vocal delivery.

It comes as something of a shock, then, that If The Ocean Gets Rough is far more polished - more complete. Female backing vocals join pianos, sweeping strings and electric(!) guitar; the drum-kit sounds complete (rather than sounding like a single snare drum and cardboard box) and is that a synthesizer I can hear (on ''I Can't Sleep'')? Has Willy Mason gone 'prog'?

No - of course not. His voice still wobbles from time to time, and the music is still based around his simple acoustic guitar playing (the lovely ''The World That I Wanted'', for example), but there's a newfound confidence in his voice, which is matched by the new 'fuller' sound. On top of this, Mason's (already impressive) songwriting is still as strong as ever, if not better. The lyrics still show a maturity well beyond his years, but the addition of the extra instrumentation allows him to explore other areas of songwriting, rather than tying him to the 'one man and his guitar' school of music.

With Mason's newly-shown confidence, and songs as great as ''Save Myself'', ''We Can Be Strong'', and ''The End of The Race'' If The Ocean Gets Rough takes the fragile simplicity of his debut, and builds upon it, creating an album of songs that songwriters twice his age will envy. It's pretty early in the year to be proclaiming a contender for 'Album of the Year'; but this 22 year-old's new record is certainly vying for the title... --Simon Fernand

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding progression 1 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
After 'Where the humans eat' i had high hopes and expectations for the second album 'If the Ocean Gets Rough' and wasnt disappointed. The Rustic quality of the first album was lost as an obviously cleaner more sophisticated recording technique was used and at first i was a disappointed at the softer slower sound. Second time round with the album i became to accept that it wasn't the same as the first and that in many ways it had more depth and was musically a higher standard. The change is there but no one wants to hear exactly the same sound over and over again. Willy provides an equally brilliant follow up, which should cater to the same audiance and maybe a wider one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful 9 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
I've had this album on rotation for a week and I'm hooked. It's another album of deceptively simple, highly personal songs, as Willy asks for support from family and friends while he tries to pin down what's important in life. 'Simple Town' is my personal favourite, the lyrics are perfect - but there really isn't a weak track on here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really liked this 29 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
only listened once or twice, but its kinda like Evan Dando's solo stuff, countryesque singer songwriter fodder with interesting lyrics. Works well as a whole album, will stand the test of time i reckon! I need to see this guy live

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever........ 8 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"The difficult second album" that many professional reviewers often talk about...

Well this is as good as "When the Humans Eat" Willys first CD.

His voice is deeper and the production not as raw as the first but the main thing the musical abilities, writing, singing, music and song content are as good as ever,

buy without hesitation, I did, you wont be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars the tricky second album, executed perfectly! 23 Mar 2007

Format:Audio CD
if you liked the first album, you will love this. the second album is always tough, especially after a successful first, but willy mason has done himself proud here.

from the opening track, every song is melodic, passionate, and very very catchy. within 2 listens of this album you will be humming/singing the songs, and will find yourself singing them all day.

i bought this album as soon as i could when it came out, and i am far from being disappointed. if you don't own this album already, then you absolutely need to!
