Bern (August Diehl; INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, SALT) and Gudrun begin a passionate love affair set against the backdrop of West Germany in the 1960’s. Following the war there has been a stifling atmosphere of provincialism but a new mood has captured the imagination of the young. Setting out to challenge the establishment Bern and Gudrun become part of a global uprising joining forces with leftist writers and political activists but Gudrun’s passion makes her join the infamous German terrorist Baader Meinhoff Gang and their paths are set to take very different courses.

This German film starts in 1961 in provincial Germany, the shadow of the war and in particular the Nazi legacy hangs over everyday life like a pall, as some do their best to distance themselves from all that Germany was, others find letting go as painful. Bernward is one such person. He is played by August Diehl - `Inglorious Basterds and `The Counterfeiters'. His father was a darling of the Nazis and his books sold in their thousands, he is now frail and semi forgotten, but Bernward wants to set up a publishing house and bring the works of old and new alike to an unsuspecting public -Deutschland Erwacht etc.

Then he meets Gudrun played by Lena Lauzemis, in her second big screen role, her first being `Die Hitlerkantate' which is yet to be released outside of Germany. She swings both ways in `die bedzimmer', but only one way when it comes to her politics and that is as far left as possible. It is hard to see nowadays how everyone used to get so passionate about politics and so you need to understand the times they were living in. Ideology and lack of tolerance was causing grief on a world wide basis and Director Andres Veiel uses genuine footage from the time to give us an idea of what the political , global backdrop was, this includes testing the atomic bomb, the trial of Eichmann and the Cuban missile crisis. Also brilliant use of contemporary music as well as getting the period detail really spot in terms of cars, fashion and some truly questionable furniture and decor - excellent.

Although made by different people and starring different actors, this could be seen as part prequel, part companion piece to The Baader Meinhof Complex. The first half of the movie covers Gudrun Ensslin's life before she met Andreas Baader and the second half focuses on the man she left behind as well as the consequences of her actions with Andreas Baader.
The film is perhaps not as slick as Baader Meinhof but I felt you got a greater insight into the main players in this one. The actions of the Baader Meinhof group are shown through archive newsreel footage rather than being played out in this one which works well as it focuses less on action and more on character.

I didnt love this film but it was interesting and worth a watch. If you are interested in the Baader Meinhoff gang then the Baader Meinhoff complex is a better film.

Dove tailed well with The Baader Meinhof Complex. It is almost a prequel to that film. Need to see this then the Baader Meinhof Complex.

Evocative and a great tie-in with 'The Baader Meinhof Complex'
