Many of this group of musicians eventually formed the Almanac Singers in late 1940. The group performed for gatherings, picket lines, and any place they could lend their voices ... Pete Seeger was not only a musician of the highest integrity; he was also one of the sharpest social satirists America has ever produced, a point sometimes missed beneath the rather quaint banjo-playing and the almost nursery-rhyme-like familiarity of songs like "If I Had a Hammer". This compilation presents Seeger the social commentator and satirist, as well as the composer and interpreter, and constitutes one of the most sublime collections of political songs you're ever likely to hear. Every song on this collection has a message; and even if you don't agree with the message, it's hard to fault his skill as a persuader of minds and hearts. That's probably why the McCarthy era considered him such a danger to the establishment.
Some of these songs are wonderfully uplifting. The title track is a sing-along classic, with a message about freedom that's all too often lost in the familiarity of the words. "River of My People" presents a magnificent, Gospel-like vision of paradise made real on earth, and "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" (famously adopted by Liverpool folkies The Spinners) is as splendid a prayer for peace as you could imagine. More of his songs are dark, though, whether it be the cynicism of "Bourgeois Blues" and "Banks of Marble" or the mournfully apocalyptic vision of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", popularised by Peter, Paul and Mary. Perhaps what listeners will be less familiar with is Seeger's razor-sharp humour. "Talking Atom" is a blistering, ironic indictment on the politics of the Cold War; Casey Jones (The Union Scab) takes a familiar American folk-song and warps it in a way that must have been dangerously subversive in its time; and the more recent "We'll All Be a-Doubling" takes a brilliant side-swipe at the Vatican's approach to population control.

This CD is OK but I have heard much better. It is certainly not bad, and parts of it are very good. Seeger is a wonderful musician and somehow this does not come out in this CD.

It was a nice overall collection of songs and even includes a few of his early 1940's tracks with the Almanac Singers, although they seem to have had a bit of echo added here, while these tracks appear in their original drier sound on cds by them on the Naxos label. There were a number of tracks here that I did not have elsewhere including a previously unreleased live version of Turn Turn Turn which may be the first recording he did of it, but in the booklet where they try to give recording dates, they put Date Unknown. It sounds more primitive than his Columbia/CBS label recordings of this song.
