A great read! As always with Lindsay the plot is pretty dark- perhaps too strong for the average reader, but if you have enjoyed the previous two Meldrum books then there is even more to grip you here. The main protagonist is Jim Meldrum, a policeman who might have been carved from the same flawed granite block as Taggart, who leads us round the twists and turns of a detective thriller. So far, so good (in fact very good), but Meldrum proves a far more complicated character than the average. The subject matter is challenging- an investigation of murder and child abuse, but I get the impression that Lindsay isn't there for mere sensation. As the plot develops the themes of the meaning of family and the nature of evil come to the fore and it all works because DC Meldrum is a man you can believe in. It's hard to categorise but Graham Green meets American Psycho with a little bit of Taggart for good measure is the closest I can get. Or if that sounds too heavy just sit back and enjoy the thriller- I did.
