I'd heard Mike Harding play Spanish Lady on his BBC Radio 2 show as a track from Donal Lunny's 'best of' Journey album, and could hardly believe the wonderful voices of Maighread and Triona Ni Dhomhnaill. Their amazing version of Spanish Lady is the opening track on this CD. Most of the songs are in Irish but this doesn't stop the enjoyment for one moment, and if you're interested the words and translations are all in the liner notes. It's a cracker of an album right through to 'Pill pill a ruin' and 'Tidy Ann' at the end. The sisters are supported throughout by Donal Lunny and as if that wasn't enough, guests like Sharon Shannon pop up here and there. This certainly is one of Ireland's finest albums in recent years.

This album shines for it's attention to detail; it's sheer entrancing musicality -and it's familiar embrace of the first language of the Irish people - Gaeilge. Triona and Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill, Donal Lunny and their 'supporting cast' are all successful traditional musicians in their own right, who have known each other for ever, and are capable of building on each others strengths - and compensating for any weakness.

I particularly like as always - the slower ballads, which are sung here with a very natural sense of spacing and time, enabling the listener to engage with the music and the story, on a deeper and more conscious level.

'Pill pill a Ruin', is a moving tale - set in the complex cultural and social context of North West Donegal - many generations ago. Yet the bitter sounding notes of betrayal - the anger and loss - are universally understood, and are timeless.

'The Banks of Claudy' is a traditional story of love and loyalty, and is very engagingly sung - with a compelling harmonic backing, by Triona Ni Dhomhnaill.

I would definitely recommend this album to all those who like 'real' traditional music, and especially to those who think they don't!

This album was inroduced to me through a Donal Lunny track elsewhere. The music is fresh yet covers traditional material without the sycophancy of many gimmicky, [traditional] Irish claiming recordings. It isn't made for the dollar or pound tourists looking for something to hang their aspirational gaelness on. This is real music in a cool way.
