Product Description

Product Description

With his razor sharp wit and erudite reasoning, veteran journalist Charles Pierce - revered for his brilliant Esquire essays - delivers a gut wrenching, side-splitting lament about the glorification of ignorance in the US. He explores how a country founded on intellectual philosophy has deteriorated into a nation of simpletons more apt to vote for American Idol than for an American President. But Pierce's thunderous denunciation is also a secret call to action, as he hopes that somehow, being intelligent will stop being a stigma.

Being a fan of all (most) things American, I was relieved to discover this book is not wanton 'yank bashing'. It provides a fascinating insight into the lives and values of milions upon millions of Americans. It also shows how these people - the poor, the insular, the poorly educated, the religious and credulous - are actually exploited by the very people who claim to represent them. Great reading.

idiot america 30 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
Could just as easily have been titled " Idiot America and its 51st State not so great britain " as sadly whats left of our own culture seems to be in its final moments prior to it being finaly swamped by that of America including its language , politics and sense of its position in the world . My initial thoughts were that the author , Charles Pierce was just a thinking mans Victor Meldrew but a short way into reading it you become aware that its a far deeper and sadly accurate study of dumbed down America/Great Britain . The only downside to it from a Brit readers point of view is that , obviously enough in view of its title it refers a lot of the times to American history and public figures to illustrate a point. Its not a problem in every case but in others a non American reader would benafit from a prior explanation or insight to an individual character or piece of American history or folklore etc to better understand the point being made . However its still a good if bitter sweet reader that will have you at times shaking your head , pulling your hair out as well as believe it or not , laughing . Opt for the latter as often as you can or else you`ll cry .
