Thrown out of Pink Floyd by the ever more egotistical Roger Waters, Richard Wright depressed went off to lick his wounds, meeting new friends along the way and he started to rediscover his muse. Out of that period came probably one of the stranger Pink Floyd family albums. I can think only of Nick Masons `Fictitious Sports' as a less commercial album.

This is certainly a period piece stuck in the eighties, appearing at times as more of an exercise in how to use a Fairlight synthesiser. The music writing credits are shared with Dave Harris (of the band Fashion) and the lyrics are purely Dave Harris, no lead vocals from Richard Wright, though you do get some of his nice harmonies from time to time. While Richard Wright has dismissed the album as something that should never have been released it appears it has now got a posthumous release on CD. The sound quality is good certainly better that my 25 year old album. It's a shame that Eye of a Gypsy was not added as a bonus but here you go Identity by Zee for fans of Fairlight Synthesisers and eighties music, and Pink Floyd completists, otherwise probably best left on the shelf.

Rick Wright from Pink Floyd plays the keybords and Dave Harris from the 80's band Fashion supplies the vocals and guitars. Although a very 1980's sounding album, it was not a big success and I bought it originally as a pre-recorded cassette sale item. The album's rhythms are programmed in a typical 80's way, but this album has hidden depths to it, making it memorable after several plays. This is another of those albums that I thought would never see the light of day in a CD format, but to my great pleasure it's here. There is very little "Floyd organ" playing on this, but the album is dynamic and somewhat edgy, most un-Floyd-like. Great all the same.

This album is one of the best examples of Synth Pop there is, almost everything is played on a synth of some kind. Rick Wright (of Pink Floyd fame) refused to play hammond organ on the album, preferring to experiment with the then cutting edge Fairlight CMI music computer. As a result the overall sound is very synthetic, almost robotic in places.

Although it dropped off the radar soon after release, and was later rubbished by Wright himself, I enjoy the album. It's nothing like his first solo effort, but his second solo album Broken China takes a similar approach (though with different technology and much more of the traditional rock instrumentation).

It's not going to be for everyone, and even fans of Wright's other works might find this a challenge, but if you're into synth pop this is a must buy album
