Graham Duff is a genius there I've said it but it pains me to admit that series 7 is not as good as previous series. Series 4 for example.
Ideal: Series 4 [DVD]
If Charles Dickens were alive today he would be writing this type of stuff along with the script to the TV series Shameless. And he would be churning them out Spike Milligan like with the Goon Show one a week.
Stick with me on this..
Why?
Simply because Dickens wrote about and knew how the poor lived- the strata or under belly of society that exist cockroach like away from the gaze of respectable society.. Duff writes about the poor and he does so from a man who knows how those people live- a 1000 theoretical miles away from so called `normal society'.
All the characters are monsters with the possible exception of Vegas' Moz who is the centre of it all. A dealer yes but a dealer with a smattering of intelligence and a conscience.
The major faults with this series is that Moz' dopey paramour Jenny played wonderfully by Sinead Matthews has become a Police Woman of all things (or should that be a Community Support Officer?) And she has jumped ship
She really is missed in the stories and Grahame Duff must have had a major headache with her exclusion.
This is strange because she was in I estimate 36 episodes and rose like a comet from a minor but memorable visitor to the flat to be a major character.
Nicci for example never works for me simply because she is too good looking, well spoken albeit with a Welsh accent and is too `normal' for Moz. This is not Nicola Reynolds fault of course and Duff has tried hard to make her character as `fracked' up as the rest of the cast. But her character simply does not `work' at all. She sticks out like a lollypop in a box of `Es'.
Both Ryan Pope and David Sant as Psycho Paul and Cartoon Head respectively are left with nothing to do and their characters have changed beyond recognition from the murdering Psychopaths of old. I simply cannot believe that Nicci would cow them the way she has.
Whilst the previous 6 series just got better and better this one is treading water just and pales when compared to the other super series.
I'm not saying it is not entertaining it is- a lot but just doesn't cut the mustard as it once did.
If this were an American series it would have a whole team of writers and one liners ala the excellent Big Bang Theory.
Big Bang Theory - Season 1-4 Complete [DVD]
Here Grahame Duff has to do it all for himself.
Good ideas abound ' the Red Mist' brilliant idea and concept but a little underused.
Emma Fryer, a brilliant actress, is great with her managerial skills after the breakup of Silicone Valet. In her scenes she shines out like a Belisha beacon on a dark Mancunian night.
Vegas is still wonderful.
A Good series but now I feel more Jeffrey Archer type of 'satisfying yet feel something's not quite right' than the Charles Dickens, brilliance, Gold Standard of old.
