I had previously tended towards buying cheaper enclosures than this, reasoning that there is virtually nothing in them to merit spending more on (it's just a PCB in a metal box after all). However, a recent enclosure failure has made me a little more cautious, especially regarding the quality of the power supply and potential surge damage to the disk, so I moved a little further up market and tried one of these enclosures from Icy Box. This is the first time I have used an Icy Box product and I have to admit I found the quality to be pretty good.
Visually it is very basic - a simple rectangular tube of aluminium with a grill on the front end - yet pretty handsome, especially painted in satin black on its funky, curved stand. There's also an attractive blue power light. A single small screw needs to be removed to gain access to the interior, which I did have a little trouble sliding out as it fits quite tightly.
Inside things remain neat and simple. The hard disk plugs directly onto the controller card, so there is no fiddly cable work involved in connecting the disk. This does have the side effect of making the enclosure longer than I had anticipated, since the controller and disk sit in line. This box relies on passive cooling and it does appear to work effectively enough, avoiding the unpleasant fan noise that ventilated enclosures bring to the party.
I find it very practical that there are both USB and Esata sockets, which ensure good performance and optimal portability. I've only had the occasion to use the USB connection so far, without problems. My only minor gripe is that the power switch, on the rear, is a little small and fiddly to find without looking.
I've noticed that some people will buy an enclosure for use with multiple disks, that they then swap around frequently. This enclosure is not really adapted to such an utilisation, even though the disk slots in very easily it must still be screwed onto the PCB. Getting the tray in and out of the box is a little delicate too and would ultimately end up damaging it, due to the need to push against the grill, which is quite fragile.
So overall, a good product: simple, solid and attractive, but probably not very resilient to being opened and closed. ****1/2
