By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 1:04 Mins
2010 has seen some great comic artists with their art books getting published. There's Alex Ross, Joe Quesada, Adam Hughes and now Jim Lee. What a fantastic year!

Jim Lee's Icons is a bargain for the price. It's hardcover with 296 pages of amazing artwork printed on good paper. Just one look at the cover and you can tell that it's really good. Publisher Titan Books has done a very good job with the printing and construction.

The amount of work featured is stunning.

Right from page 1, it's a non-stop flow of beautiful artwork featuring the superheroes of DC Comics and WildStorm -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. There are sketches, inks, layouts and full coloured illustrations. Many are printed at full page size, some across two pages, showing off all the intricate line work, grain left by the pencil hatches, details in the characters and background. You won't see any work from his days at Marvel though.

I spent a while on each page marveling at the quality of work, thinking about his dedication to comics. It's really inspiring.

You probably won't get as many page-pausing moments with other art books in 2010.

Highly recommended.

good collection 4 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
Vary fine art and description of how the work came to be. One thing i do miss however is Lees Marvel work - its a missing piece of this book and a very big piece too

Jim Lee is one of those rare comic book artists today in that he achieved a level of brilliance and maintained it. So often artists plateau out and there is a slow decline in the standard of their work, not so with Jim lee. Additionally he still, periodically, handles the interior artwork chores many of the other comic book elite artists leave behind in favour of just doing covers.
He has his critics over his storytelling abilities but a cursory glance at this collection of his work will confirm why he enjoys superstar status among his legions of fans and why his name on the front of a comic book will ensure enhanced sales.
This is a fine, beautifully put together collection highlighting his work. It features page after page of his dynamic, detailed and powerful artwork. Much of this comes from the comics he has worked on but there is also publicity, convention and some rare work included.
As well as the finished pieces there are plenty of sketches and thumbnails detailing his thought processes and the genesis of some of his best work. It is intersting to note from these just exactly how much the inkwork of Scott Williams has contributed to Lee's success. Compare the sketches to the finished work or a piece that has been inked by someone else.
As others have said it would have been nice to see some of his Marvel work but as the book specifically states 'DC and Wildstorm' that was never to be. Unfortunately Marvel do not appear interested in getting behind these sort of collections, all the recent ones seem to have been of DC artist's work {think Ross, Hughes, Bolland.}
This is a plush, heavyweight tome luxurating in some of the most stunning work by one of the top tier artists plying his trade in comics today. As such it should be bought, looked at repeatedly and treasured.
