Classic metal,
By Some Bloke (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Icon (Audio CD)
This was PDs peak with a polished and professional album of slow, melody based metal.
'Icon' gets edged towards the 'gothic' name tag, which is a bit unfair but has a point: there is a dark edge and although not a depressing album, it's introspective, soulful and melancholy. It's bassy, slow and the lyrics are a tapestry of images. There's some real classic tracks including 'Embers Fire' and 'True Belief', and the album is very accessable. The big shock was the change in direction after this brilliant album. Never the same again. Appreciate this, they left a classic.

A masterpiece....,

This is a truly beautiful album. Powerful, sweeping, haunting and resloutely metal, this has remained one of my favourite albums since it's release. Newer fans of the gothic/melodic metal genre shouldn't be put off by the patchiness of some of PL's later work - this is really genre defining.

As a 46-year-old who still listens to music with balls, I have to say firstly that I'm amazed no one else has reviewed this album. Simply put, this is the proverbial dogs nadgers people!!!! An incredible album from an awesome band. I was only lucky enough to see them once way back in 1994 but the memory of the opening moments of the gig still sends goosebumps running up and down my spine. If you are a fan of powerful epic rock music then this album should have pride of place in your collection.
