Lipatti's, with his short live of 33, had given our world these 7 disc of priceless recording... ranging from Bach, Mozart, Schubert to Chopin. His renditions on the Chopin valses, both the studio recorded version and the Besancon Festival 1950 version, are not to be parallelled.

However, I am so disapointed with this newly remaster set of disc, which totally destroyed the purity of the recording. If you are meticulous enough, you can hear the click-sound all along... which is so disturbing... I try not to be distracted by these disturbance of sound, but in vain.

If you are serious about recording, please avoid this. Go for the non-mastered one instead, which is still available in Amazon.com.

Illness prevented him from performing widely and he died at just 33, but Dinu Lipatti's recorded legacy has ensured him a place among the great pianists of the twentieth century. His considerable technique was never ostentatious, his musicianship self-effacing, yet everything that he played was infused with a poetry and poise that was truly noble. It is most welcome that EMI have devoted to Lipatti one of their first 'Icon' releases - box sets of classic recordings in the mould of the DG, Decca and Philips 'Original Masters'.

This Lipatti set contains seven discs, and while there is nothing here that is not currently available in another form, it is good to have his EMI recordings packaged together in a handy and affordable set. The heart of the set are his recordings of Bach's B-major partita, the A-minor sonata by Mozart and the Chopin Waltzes. These are represented here both in the form of Lipatti's studio recordings and the recital at Besancon which was his last. There is an almost artless directness to these that is very moving. New to me was Lipatti's playing of Chopin's 3rd piano sonata and his interpretation of Liszt's Sonetto 104 del Petrarco - these are powerful performances. Other highlights are his readings of Mozart's piano concerto no21 (exalted) and his melting touch and tone in Schumann's piano concerto.

In my view, though, the set has a downside: the sound on some items. The sound comes up well on the items listed above, but in others it is very poor. Many 'original masters' sets are still quite serviceable in this respect, but here many of the concerto recordings (from the 1940s) are quite muddy.

I actually very much enjoy Lipatti's musicianship in these recordings. It is true that one can argue back and forth in regards to the sound quality, but I tend to somehow often filter out minor blemishes or frequency issues and take in the work of the performers. I found the recordings quite delightful. The solo piano pieces in particular allow Lipatti to put forward beautiful and exquisite performances. Recommended!
There is a considerable overlap with a recent release from the Membran label Pianist of Divine Spirituality (10CD) at a much more affordable price. The performances (and sound) appear very similar to my ears. If you are on a budget you could not go wrong with the Membran release which has equivalent sound as far as I am concerned.

EMI evidently took no trouble over the remastering of these reissues. At best, in the Chopin Waltzes (both the live and studio versions) the sound is hard and wooden. At worst, in the concerto recordings, the sound is dreadful and often distorted. What a disservice to this very great pianist!
