Book Description

Frankfurter Rundschau

5.0 out of 5 stars His point of view of growing up within a family during utterly challenging times lent a humanity unexpected of Germans then. 22 Jun. 2014

Rarely do we consider empathy towards Germans living in Berlin at its Nazi height - but with the Fest family it was different as they struggled to uphold their own values, paid for at great price through decency and courage, managing to "endure the clowns" - a family motto - passed down as survival instinct by their rueful, watchful schoolmaster father who dared defiance.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating memoirs of childhood and youth of a German around WWII 24 Jun. 2014
By Pedro Lilienfeld - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A well written, insightful and fascinating account of the life of a German family before, during and after WWII seen through the eyes of a young member the family. Gripping, profound and sensitive writing of a talented writer who eventually wrote an authoritative biography of Adolf Hitler. The travails of his highly principled father who refused to accept the Nazi rules and opposed that regime without ever compromising were admirable. I thoroughly recommend this rather unique autobiography.
4.0 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a non NAZI family in Hitler's Germany. 1 Jun. 2015

Fest wrote of how his family was able to not actively participate in the Nazi juggernaut which was engulfing Germany.
Amazingly detailed memory of events from the early thirties to the end of WWII, in which Fest and his father were obliged to serve.
A worthwhile read,

I have done a lot of research and this is one of the most intelligent, thoughtful and heart wrenching memories I have read about the Nazi time in Germany. I would love to meet the author and ask more questions. Thank you, Joachim Fest.

Very good book. It shows how it was living during Hitlers time.
