I purchased two maps of Iceland in preparations of an upcoming trip. The other map is Iceland Travel Reference Map 1:425,000, and I am finding that both maps are relatively consistent with each other and consistent with the various literature I've been reading in preparations for this trip including our tour operator based out of Iceland.
Of the two maps I have, it's hard to favor one over the other. The other map has a bit of an edge when it comes to Iceland overall, but I wouldn't call this one bad.
Things it has going for it:
* Scale: The map manages to fit the whole island onto one side (at the expense of some detail) -- The other map splits the country East-West and put each part on one side of the map [minor difference]
* Road clarity: This map is absolutely clear about what roads are paved and/or unpaved. -- The other map differentiates this but the way they are depicted is unintuitive and forces me to refer to the legend quite often to reflect on what I am seeing. [It's to be determined how accurate the maps are about this but they are consistent with each other]
* Identification of items such as gas stations, etc. -- the other map is good in this regard too
* Providing of detailed maps of bigger towns, cities, popular national parks, etc. -- The other map barely covers Reykjavik.
Things I don't like
* Size: The map is large, the cover is cardboard and fills pasted. It may be inconvenient for travel. I'll have it with me, but it probably won't be my go to map.
* Road depictions are large: It does make things clear (this is probably hypocritical in the face of my earlier comment about making paved and un-paved roads clear. However, the thick road lines end up making roads look straight that show up very curvy on the other map and Google Earth.
Overall, I have relied a bit more on the other map, but I do find it makes sense to have two maps. It gives me more confidence in the consistency of each one. If I had to choose just one map, I'd choose the other one, but as you can see by my 4-star rating, I don't find this map bad.
Last; as an aside, I want to point out that when I purchased the map, The Book Depository was the only retailer on Amazon.com, and they were based out of the UK. I point this out because it is not to be expected when ordering a product on Amazon.com. Never-the-less, the service was fast, much faster than hinted at by the anticipated delivery date. As of this review date, I see there are many more options, but don't let that retailer scare you off.
