Amazon.co.uk Review

The number of tough-gal writers has always been a small. Way back in the 20th century, for example, there was Leigh Brackett, who, after publishing her first novel, No Good From A Corpse, received an urgent summons from director Howard Hawks. He wanted her to join the team of scriptwriters (including William Faulkner) then hard at work adapting Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep for the screen. The only problem was, he believed her to be a man.

In recent times, there's been a lot less confusion but a barely noticeable increase in the number of women who prefer pulp plots to polite ones. In England we've had Liza Cody's stunningly gritty Eva Wylie titles and also Lauren Henderson's cheeky takes on noir with titles like Black Rubber Dress. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ocean, 20-something Jenny Siler burst on the scene with her debut, Easy Money, demonstrating that hard-boiled is a state of mind not entirely dependent on testosterone. With its heroine Allie Kerry, a former cokehead and courier for various unsavoury interests, on the run, Easy Money treated readers to an exhausting, exhilarating road-trip across a bleak landscape of very bad intentions. Now Iced, introducing Meg Gardner, a character equally trouble-prone, offers up a no-less-bumpy ride against the backdrop of Missoula, Montana, in that dead-cold season when "the air reeked of the tundra, of glacier-churned dirt and stunted lichen".

It's 18 degrees below zero, and Meg, working for a repo agency, has had to reclaim a Jeep Cherokee from a frozen corpse, one that she has watched being fished from a hole broken in a solid stretch of ice-covered river. It had been a tough but necessary call, to grab the car under such unusual circumstances, and was easily and efficiently accomplished, given the ordinarily expected hassles. But what Meg hadn't bargained for was the mysterious metal briefcase locked in the vehicle: an object of intense desire for a particularly nasty set of visitors who arrive, baseball bat in hand and with few compunctions about punching a woman in the stomach.

If you're looking for good old-fashioned sex and violence, served up with a woman's touch, western scenery and a modern air, here's a suggestion: why not get Iced? --Otto Penzler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

For Megan, home is a place to come back to when there's nowhere left to go. Her last home was a cosy cell at a woman's prison in New Mexico - she'd stabbed a man, though most would say he'd deserved it. She gets a job repossessing cars whose owners have defaulted on their payments. When local pilot Clayton Bennett is stabbed to death, a Native American couple he'd got drunk with take the rap. His Cherokee Jeep was due for repossession and Megan grabs it, but the moment she gets her hands on the vehicle the spiral of violence that began with Bennett's murder escalates. A gang of criminally minded Russian immigrants and a woman with a red dragon tattoo, apparently working alone, seem to have a pressing interest in the Jeep. Or in something that's hidden inside it - and nothing and no one will stop them finding it . . . --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Jenny Siler's first book "Easy Money" was an exciting surprise - a tough character just outside the law, & travelling fast. In "Iced", Megan has been released from prison & has immediately taken a job repossessing cars. The first is a jeep she grabs because the owner had just been murdered. She couldn't have known she'd be hunted for what was hidden in it, so the pace tightens against the background of a bitter Winter in Montana. Megan attempts to return home, to hide from an immigrant Russian gang who have settled there. She wants to make some sort of life for herself, in spite of having to keep moving & hiding, & without knowing why. This is a very cold & elegant above average thriller.

2nd book in series? 20 Feb 2012

Maybe it's because I haven't read Easy Money that I couldn't get into this book. I certainly tried, but - man - I found it hard going. And with so many other lovely books to read I put this one down and moved onto another. Life's too short to read a book that you're not into. Maybe you may like it?

When Clay Bennett's corpse is pulled from some frozen weeds the Missoula Cops think they have an open-and-shut case - a brawl gone awry. For repo woman Meg Gardner, intent on getting Bennett's Jeep back, it's the break she's been looking for. Trouble is someone else wants the auto too. In a bitter December night, Meg stumbles into a dangerous bunch of Russian thugs intent on messing with her mission.

Meg Gardner is an unlikely heroine fraught with glorious & damaging childhood memories; a recent past that's far from squeaky clean; a lover who's too good for her & the chance for sublime domestic bliss. A chance two unusual & equally lethal opponents ruthlessly undermine.

Bring out your sweater, put another log on the fire & settle in for a rip-snortin' whodunit in the dead of a Montana winter. Brrr - couldn't tell if I was shivering from the yarn or the cold!
