Fun:
Game is fairly good, it does get a bit long winded tho, there is no campaign, strictly sandbox build up empire game.
Its highly mod able I haven't tried modding it myself, but the community has lots of different mods going that overhaul it and change lots of stuff.

The ship designer is really cool, when I say ship designer tho, I mean the internal workings of the ship i.e. engines, weapons, shields or armor, power source etc etc, the actual ship "skins" you don't design in game, however there are people who make ships models that can be imported, if you want some variety.

The one thing that I do dislike a little is the newtonian physics on ship movements, the way it works is your ship accelerates towards a destination, then slowly decelerates, like how our space shuttles work - one big engine burn to speed up then to slow down, now when you order ships to attack they quite often overshoot where they are supposed to be going, thus you have to like order them to a point about half way in between where they are and where you want them to go, just to micromanage the travel of ships.

This game has a lot to it, and can easily get confusing, so is not for the faint hearted, however if you like the challenge its well worth it. There is an in game chat window that you can use as well to chat to other people around the world playing it, even if your playing single player skirmishes.
Games can typically last at least 6 hours

If you want something more arcade like, I would recommend sins of a solar empire instead

Fun:
I'm a great fan of games based in outer space whatever the style - from Elite, to Alpha Centauri to X2/X3 - and Star Ruler brings seems to bring all of these together in one huge game. Most of all it is a real time strategy game where you have to balance military, economic, research and colonisation options. It is an incredibly complicated game so although it is easy to learn how to play it is amazingly difficult to learn how to play it well. To help you do this there is an online community where you can swop info on designs and strategies etc (a bit like Egosoft and the X2/X3 communities).

Being a patient person I love this game to death. I can imagine playing it for years to come. The question people need to ask themselves before they buy this is, "Am I prepared to devote time to learning to play this properly?" I've been playing for a month (sometimes several hours per day) and I still make basic mistakes like overstretching my economy by colonising too fast or neglecting military development to pursue research and I get wiped out by the easiest AI opponent. But I'm learning and improving. This can be a bit frustrating hence the 4 star rating for fun

The game is being continually upgraded by the developers through downloadable patches. I can't get enough of it but I can imagine some people will just hate it. To help you make your mind up you can download a playable demo ant it's well worth trying this out before deciding whether or not to buy.
