Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A remote antarctic research station, a strange alien presence and a group of hardy survivors trying to stay alive until help arrives? Sound familiar? Well, Matthew Reilly's debut novel is something of a mish-mash of several well-worn paths, borrowing liberally from movies like "The Thing" and "Die Hard" (among countless others) to create what really is the equivalent of an action movie in print. A distress call from the research station in the Antarctic prompts the arrival of a crack team of US commandos, eager to claim as their own the extraterrestrial prize discovered buried in the ice. Several station staff have already met mysterious deaths in the cavern where the supposed 'spaceship' has been found but a team of French soldiers also have their eyes on the treasure and before long all hell breaks lose as a band of soldiers and surviving scientists find themselves fighting for their life against what may be an inhuman enemy. At just over 700 pages, it's a hefty read but there is a distinct lack of padding and the plot is efficiently and tantalisingly constructed. Reilly's gifts do not lie in characterisation or believable dialogue and we are force- fed a diet of stock characters and some dialogue so banal that even Jean-Claude Van Damme would feel embarrassed to utter it. But what the book does deliver is action and plenty of it. The pace is relentless, as the reader is hit with one amazing set piece after another. Credibility is stretched to breaking point on several occasions, but that doesn't seem important. Ice Station will keep you turning the pages until the very end to create a pyrotechnic explosion of action and adventure. It is going to make one hell of a movie! --Jonathan WeirEND

Review

"Grabs you like seeing a glock pointed at your head. If you want action--and I mean serious action--then pick up Matt Reilly's "Ice Station,""--Richard Marcinko
"Some of the wildest and most sustained battles in an action thrilled in a long time...non-stop action, lots of explosions--and a little bit of conspiracy."--"Chicago Tribune"

Thrilling 24 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ice Station is a good read. it is one of those books to read as a source of escape when you are in the train, plane or any other time consuming movement. Not a story with a great deal of intellectual strength. An action packed thriller that involves lots of explosions, guns, fighting etc. Fast-paced and adrenaline stirring, this gun-blazing, heroic action book is capable of holding any lover of thrillers from beginning to end.

The plot begins with a team of US Marines led by the Shane Schofeild who answers a distress call at a remote Antarctic research station based on the worries of some scientists who found a possibly alien object deep beneath the ice, a discovery that caused the lives of two of their divers .Even before Schofeild and friends start an investigation, they suddenly themselves at risk from everybody. It isn't only the USA that is interested in the discovery. Several other countries are interested in having a stake in the ship, at all cost. That involves killing, and destroying for it. That is where the adrenaline starts flowing in the gun battles that ensued, the hilarious characters, actions and conspiracies.

I just read it after Flash of the Sun, and like the plot of the stories. Here Reilly captured it all. To show that he's the master of the plot twist, Reilly throws includes a series of gripping narratives and hair spinning encounters that includes a fighter jet that turns invisible, a far-reaching government conspiracy, a hovercraft chase, and a scientist framed for murder. The plot carries no serious moral statement. If you like unusual military thrillers, this is your pick

Book or action flick? 21 Dec 2011
By Bob
Format:Paperback
As you can see by scrolling through these reviews, opinions are mostly of either the extremely good or the extremely poor variety. To sum it up:

Is the book really well written and masterfully phrased?
No

Do the characters have well developed personalities?
No

Is the story original or well thought out?
No

Does this book deliver on every one of it's promises?
ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

So if you are looking for another literary masterpiece to delve into after finishing War & Peace and Catch-22 (both of which I read, by the way) you've come to the wrong address. But if you're open minded enough to throw believability completely out of the window and pretend that you're reading an action novel that feels as though it could be a script of a high profile big budget hollywood movie, than this novel deliveres.

This book is, at its core, an action masterpiece very few other books in the same genre can rival.

So yes I admit: I loved it!
