In my perspective this book does not fulfil my expectations given its potential. Firstly, I would say that the interviews/ discussions with the various curators are both insightful and off-putting; many of the curators come across as creatively frustrated and overly self-assured. Quotes such as: referring to themselves as "`...organic intellectuals'." Or Jens Hoffan's view, `My voice in making an exhibition is equally important as that of the artist.' Caused me to cringe, I found it nauseating when they referred to themselves in such glowing terms, and at the same time amusing.
I recently saw an exhibition in Frankfurt, at the Schirn Art Gallery, called: `The Making of Art.' The exhibition is a reversal of the book; it is a fascinating tongue-in-cheek view of artists' perception of curators. In terms of emerging artists I feel that the curators have chosen artists who appear fairly established, given that many have been shown in biennales and leading museums.
The most interesting aspects I found in this book were the choices and views by The Wrong Gallery. Equally, adding artists over 60-years-old broadened the content. In my opinion, this book falls short of its potential.
