Review

'This is a classic real-life account of desperate survival at sea, featuring Force 12 Antarctic storms, capsizes, demastings, loss of drinking water - and worse. Motor Boat and Yachting (Jan 2008)

Product Description

Ice Bird is one of the great true sea stories of the twentieth century. It is also a tale of human endurance; a testimony of one man's will to overcome almost anything and everything - physical and psychological - to stay alive. David Lewis and his 32 foot yacht, Ice Bird, set sail from Sydney, Australia in 1972 on a search for high adventure. The voyage, full of drama, emotion, and pain took place in the least hospitable and most fascinating part of the globe, the Antarctic, through some of the most treacherous waters in the world. Along the way he would not touch land for more than fourteen weeks, facing mountainous seas, constant gales, snowstorms, and freezing temperatures and he would be fighting for his life. Twice his small yacht was capsized and once it was dismasted 3,500 miles from help. His survival was a miracle of fortitude, skill, and some luck.

I loved this book - and since reading it I must have mentioned it in dozens of conversations with friends and often think about it when encountering difficult situations myself. The sheer audacity of the adventure, the ridiculous odds stacked against Mr Lewin, the numerous times he should have just given up and died... It's a really incredible story that's worthy of greater fame.

A classic 12 May 2010
Format:Paperback
David Lewis was an extraordinary character. After an adventurous youth in New Zealand he became a GP in London in the 1950's and 60's, chucked it all in to participate in the first transatlantic singlehanded race and was the first to circumnavigate the world in a catamaran. Following that he became a researcher and explorer, re-discovering ancient navigational methods of the polynesians through many adventurous voyages. This book is about his hair raising attempt to singlehandedly circumnavigate Antarctica. He capsized three times and was dismasted twice. It's an absolute must for fans of adventure maritime non-fiction. Sadly most of his other 11 books are now out of print. His style is very humorous and eminently readable. Highly recommended.
