It's 20,000 years ago and there's a bit of a nip in the air as the Ice Age kicks off. Manfred the well-meaning mammoth, Sid the fast-talking sloth and Diego the duplicitous sabre-tooth tiger form a reluctant and unlikely alliance when they come across a helpless human baby. As they try to return the tot to his migrating tribe, the trio must battle more than just the elements in this harsh world of predators and prey. There's plenty of light relief from the dramatic tension and superb action sequences, notably in the form of the brilliant comic invention Scrat, an apparently insane sabre-tooth squirrel who steals any scene in which he--and his acorn—appear (although a flock of keen but hapless dodos give him a close run for the film's comic laurels).

Featuring the voice talents of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo, Ice Age is a thrilling, chilling comedy adventure that's undeniably cool.

On the DVD: Ice Age on DVD boasts a whole host of special features, including commentary by director Chris Wedge and co-director Carlos Saldhona, deleted scenes and trailers. The highlight of the bonus material is the exclusive short "Scrat's Missing Adventure" but for the real nitty-gritty go to "Under the Ice". This contains numerous featurettes of varying lengths, including "The Making of Ice Age", "Behind the Scenes", "Art of Effects" and "Sid's Voice Development". These tell you pretty well everything there is to know about the film and its creation. For additional humour check out the brief "Scrat Reveals" segment and Sid's commentary sequences. --Helen Baker

Amazon.co.uk Mums' Committee Review

Twenty thousand years ago, the Earth was being overrun by glaciers and creatures everywhere were migrating to avoid the oncoming Ice Age. In this time of danger, we meet the weirdest herd of any age: a fast-talking sloth named Sid, a moody woolly mammoth named Manny, a devilish sabre-toothed tiger named Diego and a crazy sabre-toothed squirrel known as Scrat, whose aim in life is to bury his beloved acorn! This bunch of misfits unexpectedly comes together in a quest to return a human infant to his father. Braving lava pits, ice caves, freezing weather and a secret plot, these Ice Age friends must become the first heroes! This film held my entire family's attention right to the very end, the animation was the best we have ever seen, and the characters were extremely lovable. The story was the right length, as even my two-year-old sat down and watched the entire film! The story had us all laughing, although it was sad in a couple of places. As soon as the film had finished my five-year-old wanted to see it again! One of the DVD extras, "Scrat's Missing Adventure", was so funny. He is such a cute character and you so want to see him succeed with his acorns. There was nothing that we didn't enjoy about this film. It's the best movie we have seen this year, and comes highly recommended. The running time is approximately 77 minutes. --Hayley Pink

Ice Age is a wonderfully produced film suitable for all the family. Set long ago (20,000 years, to be precise), it tells the story of a long-toothed squirrel named Scrat, who is trying to crack open an acorn, and his efforts and results continue throughout the 77 minutes running time. All the creatures of that era are trying to escape the new Ice Age, but the three main characters go in the opposite direction. They are Manny, a mammoth, who gets emotional when he sees some cave paintings, Sid, a rather silly sloth with expressive eyes, who has been left behind by his family, and Diego, a sabre-toothed tiger with an eye on an easy meal. They find a lost baby, and the film shows how they try to get him back to his family. Set against a backdrop of snow and ice, the storyline is good, and the pace is kept up the whole time. There is a fantastic sequence when they take an unexpected trip on the equivalent of a glacial roller coaster! We encounter friendship, loyalty, daring, treachery, humour and there is a definite feel-good factor when it's all over. The quality of the graphics is superb, and the characters definitely come to life before your eyes. This DVD includes Scrat's new adventure, "Gone Nutty", and many other extras. This disc is well-worth adding to your collection, and will be watched over and over again. --Charmaine Brown

This is a DVD with a U rating, making it suitable for the whole family. The film is animated, and the DVD format comes with the added extras that all these packages seem to come with now. The main characters are a Sid the Sloth, Manfred the Mammoth and a sabre-toothed tiger named Diego... a very unlikely trio. The film is set back during the Ice Age, where the three main characters come together to brave the elements and return a baby to his father. The baby had been separated from his family after an attack by the sabre-toothed tigers, so while Diego is seen as a hero, he was actually the cause of the problem in the first place. The animation is brilliant, and the voices match the characters perfectly. The film is maybe not as slick as some of the recent Disney animations, but it's definitely up there alongside Shrek and Monsters, Inc.. The favourite character has to be the squirrel that keeps popping up all through the film with his acorn. This was a great film, enjoyed by a group of children whose ages were between three and 13. So definitely one for the Christmas stocking. --Jane Tari

This Disney animation is a tale of good triumphing over evil, of friendship and success. A cast of mismatched characters' quest is to return a baby human to his herd. The ethical question of him growing up to kill them arises, but the instinctive urge to protect the young rises to the surface, or does it? You have to watch to find out. Watch out for those special moments, evolution in the ice, the spaceship in the ice and the little boy's reaction. The characters are extremely complex with all the facets required for a good characterisation. On the DVD version the special features are as always good fun, with behind-the-scenes tales as well as a few extra short animations. This is for anyone, from the age of six to 60. The animation is wonderful and the animals are lifelike and have qualities that make them lovable. The humans are rugged but in this story thit is they who are really the baddies. The scenery is beautiful, and quite takes your breath away. All in all, very good viewing. --Lucinda Austin

I saw Ice Age twice at the pics - and bought the video the day it came out (I'm a 35yr old female, so this isn't just for kids or male 'kidults'!). Ice Age is pure, simple entertainment from start to finish. The animation is sharp, vivid and exceptionally well done, with subtle emotions being conveyed perfectly. The pace of the film is spot on and there's no cringeworthy 'let's break into a song' moments. If you enjoyed the wit and quick one-liners of Shrek, or if you're simply a fan of lush computer generated animation - buy Ice Age, you won't be disappointed.

In the modern genre of computer animated kids films, this ranks among the very best. Unlike so many kids films, adults will enjoy every minute of this one - with or without the kids.

It's a simple story, of course - my 3 year old had no problems following the plot. But there are endless background funnies and asides for the grown ups that make this film a gem. Like Shrek, the heroes of this film are about as imperfect as they come. Much of the humour comes from the interactions of the 3 main characters, none of whom particularly want each other's company.

Lisping Sid (lishping shid) is hilarious throughout, and the squirrel who turns up between scenes will split your sides.

With none of the gushing sentimentality that Disney relentlessly pump out, this film is way out in front of other recent mediocrity, such as Dinosaur or - God help us - Jimmy Neutron. In my book, it even beats Monsters Inc for all round family entertainment.

This is the best kids film since Shrek and is a lot more entertaining than many recent adult titles.

Buy it - however old you are!

A beautiful film 3 April 2007
By Tonkfan
Format:DVD
A wonderful film that's both laugh-out-loud funny and incrediby touching. Without being twee or sugary, it tells the beautiful story an odd little disfunctional group that becomes a loving family, brilliantly demonstrating how the bonds of love and friendship and loyalty can help us get through anything.

It's a must-see for anyone, but can't help feeling it might be especially helpful to any of us who come from more 'unusual' families/backgrounds. In that respect, it reminds me of the equally wonderful Australian road movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert (don't laugh at that until you've watched them both). Both films share the same messages about how the families we 'make' can be just as important as the families we are born into.

Wonderful for children and adults, this is one of the best cartoons I've ever seen.
