Ian Anderson solo effort

First and most important: it is NOT Jethro Tull!

It is a show of Ian Anderson with a group of session musicians and a symphonic orchestra (Frankfurt Philharmonic, to be exact). If you are looking for Jethro Tull live DVD, you've got a wrong disk. This show is as different from traditional rock concert almost as, say, "Aqualung" is different from "Divinities - 12 dances with God". But if you are looking for DVD with good music, then you have found one!

The tracklist includes songs from IA solo albums and JT classics:

01. Eurology

02. Calliandra Shade

03. Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day

04. Up The Pool

05. We Five Kings

06. Life Is A Long Song

07. In The Grip Of Stronger Stuff

08. Wond'ring Aloud

09. Griminelli's Lament

10. Cheap Day Return

11. Mother Goose

12. Bouree

13. Boris Dancing

14. Living In The Past

15. Pavane

16. Aqualung

17. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

18. My God

19. Budapest

20. Locomotive Breath

You will be amazed by some of the arrangements (Aqualung in particular) and the way Ian Anderson communicates with the audience. BTW, I enjoyed the interview section of this DVD almost as much as the concert itself!

I am sure that if you like different kinds of music, you will love this DVD.

Nearly but not quite. 12 Jun 2007

As a long time Jethro Tull fan I looked forward very much to this release.Tull with a new twist i thought. I have to say though its slightly disappointing. The orchestrations dont go far enough, the arrangements dont really make use of the variety an orchestra can bring to bear. The whole thing suffers because its neither one thing nor another. Its not just Ian with orchestra he has a "Rock" band on stage with him too.If he was going to play as "Tull with orchestra" than Id rather have seen the Jethro Tull line up on stage rather than Ians "Solo" tour band. (Martin Barre is sadly missed). The whole thing just doesnt sit together, the drums and electric guitar dont fit at all, songs from the Tull Canon are not rearranged enough for orchestra. Id like to see Ian write music especially for orchestra and drop the "Rock" band for this sort of project and truly play with orchestra. An opportunity missed I think.

Usually when an artist starts going back over old work and fiddling about with it, it is a sign that they have started to run out of ideas. Not so with this effort from Ian Anderson!

The Jethro Tull frontman/ creative driving force takes a set of tracks from Tull's back catalogue and a few of his more recent solo offerings and performs them live with the accompaniment of a full orchestra. The orchestra gives him a wide palette from which to draw, much wider than the traditional 4 piece band format. Using the rich colours and textures available, he recreates some of the tracks into more interesting and complex pieces. He is up front on the stage with trademark flute and vocals, there is a genuine interacton between him, the orchestra and the audience. It's an album well worth having for any Tull fan. Especially because as well as playing it safe with well known tracks a few lesser known Tull gems, such as `Up the Pool' are also given a welcome airing.

At the time of writing Amazon has no track listing posted, so here it is:-
