At first glance this seems to be an instrumental excursion into the Jethro Tull back catalogue. Be fooled not, this is an opportunity for Ian Anderson to re-visit some classic Tull songs, interspersed by the odd solo piece, with a different band and orchestra. Anderson's voice is in fine form as he resurrects the rare gem Up the Pool and settles generally for the safety of the Aqualung album. I always like live albums that have the in between track banter from the artist and Anderson never fails to deliver in this department. A real treat for all Tull fans. Buy it and enjoy.

As a (nearly) life long Jethro Tull fan, this is an album I would want to have in my collection, purely for completeness' sake, but I'm afraid its intrinsic merits don't really justify more than two stars.

Without exception, the original versions of these songs are superior, in many cases vastly superior. The orchestral backing doesn't add anything of real value (except perhaps a sense of novelty, which soon passes) and the whole album is very flute dominated, to an extent that will try the patience of even the most diehard Tull fan. I acclaimed Anderson's last solo album, "Rupi's Dance" as a "masterpiece" on Amazon, and I stand by that judgement, but in my view Anderson's huge talent is largely wasted in this type of setting. It doesn't provide a vehicle for either his songwriting skills, which are legendary, or for his creative innovation.

Of course, it must have been great fun for Anderson to play live with an orchestra, and for all we know this may be his priority at this stage of his life - just to have a good time with fellow musicians. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean that the results are necessarily worth preserving for posterity. And perhaps Ian needs to hear the message loud and clear that it is not what fans want. What we really want is a new Tull album, or failing that another solo album with new songs.

Usually when an artist starts going back over old work and fiddling about with it, it is a sign that they have started to run out of ideas. Not so with this effort from Ian Anderson!

The Jethro Tull frontman/ creative driving force takes a set of tracks from Tull's back catalogue and a few of his more recent solo offerings and performs them live with the accompaniment of a full orchestra. The orchestra gives him a wide palette from which to draw, much wider than the traditional 4 piece band format. Using the rich colours and textures available, he recreates some of the tracks into more interesting and complex pieces. He is up front on the stage with trademark flute and vocals, there is a genuine interacton between him, the orchestra and the audience. It's an album well worth having for any Tull fan. Especially because as well as playing it safe with well known tracks a few lesser known Tull gems, such as `Up the Pool' are also given a welcome airing.

At the time of writing Amazon has no track listng posted, so here it is:-
