As with all the martial arts, one cannot learn from a book; but as an aid to learning with a good instructor, this book is very good. It goes into just enough detail to keep the student's interest, whilst not overburdoning him/her with technicalities, thus allowing the student to make progress. It also goes to great pains to make the student very aware of the dangerous aspect of the Art, and to instil respect for the weapon, and its history. Let's not forget that, unlike most of the other martial arts, the sole purpose of this weapon is to kill!! There are only 3 possible outcomes from a "face-off" between two samurai armed with swords (a) you die (b) he dies (c) you both are so seriously injured that you are still likely to die! (Fujii Okimitsu - Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu)

IAI- The Art of Drawing the sword is a great place for someone to start their study of iaido. Punctuated with interesting tidbits of info (though I am at a loss as to why so much space was devoted to sword-testing on corpses and on the proper procedure for seppuku), it explains in simple terms the basic movements and kata. A must have for anyone interested in the practice of the Katana or Daito.

It is a good starting point for someone who is a beginner to iaido. The book is in most part detailed and well written, with interesting historical references. I was however disappointed with the drawings depicting the movements which I found childish and in some instances confusing.

This book covers a lot of ground! It includes everything from every part of a Japanese sword, seppuku, how the blades were tested (and includes more humane tests one can do at home in this modern age), along with taking care of the blade, dos and don'ts as well as some great history. Great book, I highly recommend it!

Good overall introductory text to all things relating to the use of the japanese sword and iai-jitsu.
'Flashing Steel' is probably a better and more focussed basis for iai-jitsu training though.

Well worth buying as the author covers a lot of ground on the subject matter and still has time to write an interesting story on the 47 Ronin.
