4.0 out of 5 stars Light & quick insight into IVF for newbies, 11 Jun 2006
This is a must-read for anyone thinking of embarking on IVF or for those who have just scheduled their first cycle. Although written from an American perspective it is 100% applicable to anyone thinking of or actually newly embarking on the IVF journey.

As any IVF newbie will agree; there is a lot of reliance on hear-say and the internet for any information on the actual experience (apart from of course the medical-speak one hears from the doctors) and as well as explaining techniques this also gives a lot of practical advice e.g. a list of instructions for your inner circle of confidantes e.g. "please do NOT tell me you know how I feel unless you, yourself, have endured an IVF cycle; please don't ask me if I'm pregnant yet" (though hopefully you wouldn't have to ask your best friends these things - again it is written from a straight-talking American perspective...)

It hammers home the idea that during this time you are the most important person and to put yourself first. It also gives some advice for the poor stressed out husbands / partners going through it with you.

When you read this book you'll realise that there are a lot of people out there going through the same anticipation & anxiety of the unknown as you and that's very reassuring.

1.0 out of 5 stars Patronising and unhelpful, 7 Jun 2007
By JCM (UK) - See all my reviews
I am not particularly impressed with this book at all. I was hoping for some fact-based info written with a little compassion by people who know. The book does contain facts, however I find comments such as "you will grow to strongly dislike these shots" extremely unhelpful.

As someone that is about to embark on IVF I have my eyes wide open - it is not going to be a picnic in the park. However, it is also a time when you want reassurance and positive comments. I feel this book is a little too 'brace yourself girl as you're in for a rough ride'.

3.0 out of 5 stars A simple overview of the IVF process, 13 Nov 2008
By FeeB (High Wycombe, UK) - See all my reviews
Having read the other reviews on this book, I decided to get it anyway as I liked the fact that it was written by two women who had been through IVF themselves.

It is very basic in its explanation of the IVF process and is a good introduction to what happens when and why. I did learn a few things - like how the different home pregnancy tests differ and about the different post-transfer blood tests - but most of the medical stuff I'd read elsewhere.

What I did like was the humour and the very honest account of how much time you will need for yourself - this is especially relevant if you're one of those people who is constantly asked to do this and that for every organisation you are associated with. I can also see myself throwing 'fries at the McDonalds guy because they're not salty enough'. It's also made me think about who we will tell what and who we will get to be our support team.

It is patronising in places - like advising the reader not to roll sleeves down too quickly after a blood test to avoid getting blood on your blouse. I would imagine that by the time you get to IVF treatment, most women will have had blood taken a few times!

I doubt I will refer to this book again now that I've read it.
