My god, most of the criticism levelled against the novella is misinformed. There are certain things you come to expect from a novel and just because there isn't some huge labyrinthian plot it doesn't make "On Chesil Beach" necessarily bad.

For a novella it is incredibly polished and as one of our greatest living writers McEwan has done an impeccable job here.
