anti-anxiety and hypnosis 31 July 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I bought this CD (MP3) without knowing much about it. I do not regret the purchase and it has become one of my favorite listening experiences when I need to relax. It is almost hypnotic, but not quite.

Basically here is what you get.

The first track is called the "Introduction". It last 30 minutes and is consist of David Ison speaking. He relates personal experiences dealing with pain management and meditation. He then goes into some of the basic principles of breathing, meditation, yoga, and witnessing. Witnessing is the skill of detaching yourself from personal emotions while simultaneously letting them surface. It is quite effective, but is a learned skill that takes practice. David's voice is very pleasant, slow, and soothing. He articulates each word crisply and his tone and reflection is used effectively. He obviously put a lot of thought and practice in how the message is delivered and it shows. While he is speaking the music is playing in the background.

The second track is shorter and is called "Guided Meditation". The music now includes the guideposts that were not present in the first track. The guideposts allow you to time your breathing precisely. His voice is slower, more hypnotic. He doesn't speak continually as in the first track and uses silence with crafted precision. The message is more abstract but very comforting. The musical guideposts are punctuated with occasional highlighted emphasis. When these notes hit, the sincere listener can feel stress and anxiety literally leave the body. Is this hypnosis? Is it meditation? Both? At any rate, it works.

The last track is 30 minutes once again and is nothing but the music. The listener can do nothing but time her breathing to the soothing rhythm and the guideposts. The emphasised notes are milestones and the pent-up stress in the body rises to the surface, is acknowledged, and then melts away.

This is a WONDERFUL listen. You won't regret your purchase. 7 April 2010

WOW! If there was a rating above 5 stars, I'd give it. Here is why it impressed me so much. I've listened to a few meditation or spiritually inclined audio CDs and sometimes little things like the reader's voice or the background music are not conducive to relaxing or stand out so much that you're distracted from the message. Not so with this. The reader's voice is deep, relaxed, heartfelt. His voice alone, his cadence, is relaxing. The core of this program is deep breathing. The instruction is spiritual in that it brings the focus inward. Self-awareness and embracing one's feelings is encouraged. The reader is also the person who developed this particular method of relaxing and, thereby dealing with emotional and physical discomfort. This practice was borne out of his own severe pain resulting from an auto accident. That he was able to avoid a spinal fusion largely if not totally due to this practice is very impressive. I would highly recommend this to anyone suffering physically or emotionally. I think that pretty much includes us all, to one degree or another.

Parting waves: Mindfulness and healing sounds 11 Nov. 2010

Ison Pain management System
Music and Meditation to Release Pain and Anxiety

There is no doubt that relaxation response breathing and a rhythmic pulsating sound can influence degrees of self-care management regarding pain ( read sidebar comment for my personal experience. The Ison Pain Management System, part of the Musical Body Series is a user-friendly two CD media for integrating breath and is something akin to the art mindfulness meditation. Of course everyone by now has heard of mindfulness the newest healing system that is gaining popularity across many therapeutic schools and medical institutions. One could make the analogy that mindfulness meditation is an extra strength formula and the Ison method regular strength. The advantages of regular strength, is in its simplicity and purity. Non pretentious nor over intellectualizing theoretical constructs and in so doing stays close to the heart of the matter which is using the breath, using sound, using rhythm, and using a common sense narration that can be easily adapted by almost everyone. Its simplicity also lends itself across a broad audience base that prefer listening to sounds as aids to maintaining an engaged mind vs the discipline of a sitting meditation or more rigorous posture. The current popularity of mindfulness has one major drawback which is it requires significant practice and training, the Ison system only requires a commitment to listening and regulating the breath. On the plus side for Mindfulness is it enjoys a large body of evidence based research showing its effectiveness as well as an impressive list credentials dating back over twenty years stemming from Harvard and Boston Medical. As in any healing modality finding balance be it in diet, medicine or relaxation therapies it always comes down to know thyself and what learning styles best suit your temperament! For anyone interested in an auditory sound based system for deepening their own self-care pain intervention and management Ison's system gets high marks and is an excellent starting point for deepening the healing breath and is clinically tested and proven effective
.

Currently there are a number of products that are being offered regarding sound therapy coupled with relaxation response. The quality of this particular product is superior and offers a narrative that is autobiographical and therefore helps the listener connect with the guide David Ison. The material offered doesn't pretend to offer more than is required which in itself allows for a very simple yet deeply healing environment. At the core of healing energy is the breath. In guided imagery, in music therapy, in hypnosis, in psychotherapy, it always comes down to allowing oneself to enter into deep space of relaxation which is where much of healing takes place. If one is to explore the power of pain control using techniques offered in this musical body system one will be in good hands. Recommended for all.

My healing Story ( a sidebar )

If you are a caregiver I can share my story. I recently played the role of caregiver in guiding my daughter in a breath practice as she was being subjected to a rather painful procedure in a hospital undergoing treated for complications related to colorectal cancer that would have otherwise traumatized her and exacerbated her pain levels. As caregivers we can offer healing presence and reverse the affects of that all too often feeling of helpless as we see our loved ones suffering, frightened, in pain. Lying in pain readying for a CAT Scan she was being given 16 very large syringes of medication through a tube inserted in her nostril; a painful and fearful experience as she received the medication. Holding her hand I simply counted 123456789 slowly rhythmically methodically over and over again until each tube was empty. The next day we were discussing her time in the emergency room and is when my daughter Eva said, " Thanks Dad - I would've never been able to go through this if it weren't for the counting of the breath".
