Touching and deep 15 April 2004
By Greycat
Format:Paperback
This book does indeed stay with you. At first, it seems like a standard tale of a woman's failed marriage and her quest for meaning... but then it quickly moves deeper, following that quest, but proving how each and every character is hiding something from themselves, for various reasons.

Depression, pain and love are all major themes covered in depth, and it has made me think about all three, a fact which alone makes it more than worth reading. The beautiful Southern style of realism versus romance makes the journey that much more palatable - even when you despise some of the characters, you are still trying to figure out how this unusual story will continue, as with the main character's life itself.

A journey.

I read this book over the weekend and couldn't put it down. The characters are well drawn, and you really get to know them. I really cared for Molly and her father, Charles and Di (the swans), and the Ponder family. This book will make you laugh and cry and will make you believe in second chances and love.

A good summer read 7 July 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I dove into Up Island on July 3, and emerged on July 5 -- not exactly refreshed and renewed, but feeling like I'd spent a weekend with a soul sister. This is the first ARS book I've read, and I love the way she immerses you in both the emotional and physical environment of her character. Yes, I suppose that Molly doesn't qualify as a 90's woman -- she ends up taking care of others instead of herself. But, you know, this seems to me to be a classic kind of mid-life story. Sometimes we do find ourselves by taking care of others. And, the reality for women Molly's (and my) age is that you find yourself bidding farewell: to children, sometimes spouses and parents, and caring for aging parents at the same time. I love the way Molly finds herself healing: slowly, quietly, even as she tells herself, "I need to really deal with this." I'll definitely try some of ARS other books.

Up Island is down for the count

Don't judge Martha's Vineyard by this book
Poor Anne Rivers Siddons...She writes a book about a plump southern wife who wraps herself in saran-wrap as a failed attempt to titilate her cheating husband. Read more

BORING!!!!
No plot, boring characters. After the husband leaves her in the very beginning of the book, it's all downhill from there. Don't even bother with this one. Read more

rediculous
I thought that this book was so boring and so hard to believe. There are so many better southern authors with a much greater and more compelling story to tell. Read more
