Product Description

Product Description

This book focuses on the evolving signaling system in the public telephone network and is more of a iche EE title than previous books in the Black series.ISDN (Integrated System Digital Networks) technology which allows for the transmission of voice, dte, video at very high speeds over a phone line, is finally being implemented after years of hype.

From the Back Cover

25919-2

For years, users have heard the hype about ISDN's ability to provide high-capacity transmissions for voice and data over telephone lines. Recently, this promise has become a reality with the national deployment of the ISDN technology. In addition, ISDN has provided an efficient means to access the widely used Signaling System 7 (SS7).

Trusted telecommunications expert Uyless Black has put together a complete yet accessible guide to the basics of narrowband signaling and the specifications for ISDN and SS7. He also discusses the potential applications of the protocol, including video conferencing, Internet access, and mobile and wireless 800 service.

Topics include:

  • ISDN and its layers
  • SS7 architecture and standards
  • MTP, SCCP, ISNI, ISUP, and TCAP
  • Operations maintenance and administration

This book is intended for both tutorial and reference work, and complements other editions in the Advanced Telecommunications Technologies series.

Uyless Black has great skill in technical writing. This book is not for those who need to know SS7 to a low level, or need to know the protocol inside it. But as a book for the beginner or someone who does not need to know SS7 inside out, then this book is easy to understand, and has appropriate coverage of both ISDN and SS7. So in short not a large book, nor is it in depth, but what is there is well written, and therefore for someone who only wants light coverage it is very good.

I am a sales engineer and came across this book while doing an installation of a voice and data integration network in Moscow. It gives a good description of ISDN and SS7 from a Sales Engineer perspective. It explains what ISDN is and how it interacts with SS7. For somebody implementing a voice and data network where SS7 is a requirement, this a good book.

I read the ISDN part of the book and then stopped. I am a software developer and have worked on several device drivers, eg, ATM and Ethernet under UNIX. This book tells you the basics about ISDN. It is easy to read and understand. But if you want to work on ISDN protocol stack, hardware design, or device driver, this book is definitely not enough. You want to read some other ISDN books.
