Warning, I bought this book in Dec 2011 and while initially a little surprised as there was only a small amount of code examples from the book on the website I expected very soon there would be more. It is now the beginning of Feb 2012 and there have been no additions to the example code on the website. Although you can contact the Author directly why should I?
The purpose of code support books is to help people understand concepts and provide working examples to help the user debug their own applications. A book on coding that only contains snippets of code is next to useless especially as I have found several that just don't work or required hours of debugging and searching the internet to get working in a real environment.
I bought this book as having already spent a few months writing simple applications I wanted to extend my knowledge. This book appeared to be more specific on several areas and I expected more detail on each topic to really go beyond the what I call "skip it all" type books that cover everything but in a very light way. I am sorry to say but this book just offers the same skip over it style, the examples are simple and don't offer anything above many other books I already own.
This feels like a rush it out as its IOS5 the latest SDK from Apple with promises like iCloud etc it appears to be right on the edge of the wave but its not. Use the internet instead of this book or wait longer like I should have done and get a reviewed title that you know offers you what you want.

HASH(0x9305fc54) out of 5 stars A great guide for iOS developers and beginners 12 Feb. 2012
By Christopher Rizzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
If you are looking to get started with iOS development and have a basic understanding of how the frameworks operate, this is the book for you. The author offers all the example projects in this book for download on his website and it makes following along with the book very easy to understand, he is very thorough in explaining how each process works, as well this book provides great screenshots to help you when you are reading along and in Xcode at the same time. Jumping from iOS 4 to iOS 5 brought a lot of changes not only with the actual OS on the phone but also for developing applications running iOS 5, with the new features in iOS 5 such as iCloud this book does a great job of explaining how to implement them in your application. This book is up to date, most of the other books on Amazon are dated and do not offer the updated info for Xcode 4.2.

HASH(0x9305fc90) out of 5 stars Very well written and excellent book! 11 April 2012
By rahulskh - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I can positively say that this is a very well written book. I purchased this book after previewing chapter on iCloud and was fascinated with the way the concept was explained and structured. I have bought several Objective C & IOS development guides trying to get an understanding of development on the iPhone. None of the books would guide you properly and did not contain useful exercises and examples.
I definitely recommend this book to any developer who wants to start building iOS applications and doesn't have any previous experience with Objective C and/or Cocoa. The book slowly builds on programming principles and Cocoa patterns, never assuming that you should know this or that. While knowing a bit of Objective C definitely helps, the author explain each concept good enough to allow you to progress with the book without wondering what in the world have you just wrote.
I highly recommend this book as a foundation laying book for beginning app development and will be looking forward for any iOS books written by Shawn!

Good work!

HASH(0x93cafa38) out of 5 stars iOS 5 Core Framework Develop and Design the missing manual. 19 Mar. 2012
By Bill In Memphis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
iOS 5 Core Framework Develop and design is the missing manual for iOS development. It's a great read and put together the way we develop. The examples are complete and poignant. Its an easy read, and I find myself going back to it as a reference. If you're new to iOS Development or an old hand at it, there's something in this manual for you. I purchased the eBook, but am going back to buy the printed version... Its hard to dog ear a eBook... :-) I highly recommend this book, and will look for more from Mr. Welch...

HASH(0x93c19f0c) out of 5 stars Great Book, Simplification of Complex Topics 25 Feb. 2012
By T. Frank - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Mr. Welch's book, iOS Core Frameworks, could not have come at a better time. While other approaches give a long, drawn-out education to these newly available features for programmers (and that approach can be valuable), this book provides a simpler explanation and example of how to implement these features within your projects. The sample code was quickly provided by the author upon request.

For me, this book provided more clarify to implement Core Data and iCloud with two of my current projects.
HASH(0x9305fa38) out of 5 stars Useful Overview 29 April 2013
By S. S. Scott - Published on Amazon.com

As a new-to-apple iPhone app developer, but an experienced C++ programmer, I knew that learning the apple libraries would be critical. This book gives you an overview of the different iOS frameworks. For each one, it covers their purpose, their key classes and how they interact with each other and the calling code, and some sample code showing use. For Core Data and Core Graphics/Image/Animation, I have already gotten my money's worth from the book. The Apple class documentation provides great class-level detail, but doesn't always stitch things together so that you can see the bigger picture - this book fills that gap quite well. The sample code is fairly lightweight, and I had to work in places to understand the context (thus the one star ding) - though I understand the author's desire to not have half the book dedicated to source code. I'll grant that the snippets integrate well into the text and demonstrate the particular concept under discussion - but I wish there was just a titch more context around said snippets.

Bottom line: if you're new to iOS development and need to come up to speed quickly on the frameworks and what they can do for you, this is a good investment of money & time.
