Product Description

Mummies: Secrets of the Past follows researchers and explorers as they piece together the archeological and genetic clues of Egyptian mummies. These relics of the past create a window into the fascinating and mysterious world of the pharaohs. In addition to increasing our understanding of the culture, religion, medicine, and daily life thousands of years ago, scientists today are reconstructing mummy DNA and deciphering ancient texts to gain insight into modern human genetics and advance medical treatments. To unwrap the secrets of the pharaohs is to perhaps glimpse the future of our own civilization. Narrated by actor Christopher Lee (The Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, and the original 1959 film The Mummy), Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs explores the mysterious world of ancient Egypt through the fabric of its ancient mummies. The Egyptians mummy-making culture was not the first, the last, or even the longest. But to many, it was the greatest. The Egyptians believed their destinies were the wishes of gods, whose wills their dead ancestors might influence. By revering their ancestors through mummification, they hoped to gain better control of their destiny

3.0 out of 5 stars Great 3d but the documentary was stale 18 May 2011
Format:Blu-ray
I really enjoyed the 3d in this documentary, it was clear and well defined - however the actual documentary was sadly a little boring. This was very surprising as it has the fantastic Bob Brier! I think if you didnt know very much about Egypt or were a youngster, then you'd enjoy it more. If you were a parent who has a child that was doing a school project, I think it would be an excellent way to get them interested.

Mummies - Secrets of the Pharaohs 3D is a documentary following researchers and explorers investigating the archaeological and genetic remains of long dead ancient Egyptian rulers, their tombs and monuments. It includes recreations of the mummification and burial of Rameses, the discovery of over 40 mummies by Charles Wilbour as well as an insight into the way in which modern scientists discovered how to extract DNA from the bones of the remains.

The 3D is really very good indeed with minimal ghosting, excellent depth and very sharp colourful high definition picture quality. Ancient tombs and monuments including the Ramesseum, the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Luxor Temple, Abu Simbel, Karnak and the interior of tombs in the Valley of the Kings look stunning. Short of visiting them in person, this is about as good as it gets. Recommended for anybody that loves Ancient Egypt and quality 3D presentations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty average 28 Nov 2011
Format:Blu-ray
Slightly disappointing film which I don't think I'll be watching again for some time (if ever). If you're thinking about going for this movie because it is cheap, I wouldn't bother. Certainly much less entertaining than the Imax Grand Canyon movie. In English or French (no subtitles), it traces some of the history of the Pharaohs, and in particular the DNA secrets that might be held in the mummies that have been discovered in Egypt. There were a few nice shots but in general it was rather boring and short.

4.0 out of 5 stars good documentary about mummies. 2 July 2012
Format:Blu-ray
I didn't expect anything but a film about mummies and that's is what I got. This isn't a action movie and the 3d is just around for depth mainly. Too many people watch these for things to pop out at them. That's not reality with most of these imax shows. They are simply shows about a topic shot in 3d. Christopher Lee sounds very impressive as the narrator too. THe 3d effects are mainly in tombs so it's not going to be that spectacular. However the shots are lovely and you do learn alot in this documentary. The outside shots are incredible though. Recent events have made traveling to egypt more dangerous and now mobs are raping young english women in the street there for not wearing burkas. So at least you are safe watching this one on tv.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect quality, boring content 18 April 2012
By Yeray
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
The quality of the documentary is more than perfect, as with all IMAX documentaries I have watched. On the other hand, the 3D effects are not as WOW inspiring as they are in other blurays. And to finish, the contents, though accurate, well explained and well presented are boring, presented at a very slow pace and without much passion. Not bad, but not great.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing 21 July 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
truly disappointing.except the sight of the four pharaohs seated in the valley of the kings, nothing else is appealing.Though shot by imax, there is nothing to be invested in,at 39 min running time,it feels not worthy of the price.sorry egyptian lovers
