Product Description

Examining the complete breadth of the history surrounding heraldry, this text looks not only at the medieval world in which it thrived, but at the language it used and the elaborate system of coded messages it conveyed, and its inextricable link with chivalry. It also covers both the larger aspects of heraldry and everyday heraldic uses such as guilds and cities, hospitals and schools, and contains a comprehensive glossary. The international uses of heraldry and the way in which different countries in different ages have interpreted it are also included. Most of Europe and the Americas are covered as well as looking at Scandinavia, Africa and Japan. Intended for both novices and experts, the book has a wide range of content, with specially commissioned artwork from heraldic artists and many previously unpublished illustrations

1.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book BUT... 14 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
As reviewer P.Conlon says, Mr Slater and/or his publishers seem to like recycling material.

I already owned The Complete Book of Heraldry and very pleased with it I was too. So much so that I bought The Illustrated Book of Heraldry on sight. Unfortunately, once I got home, I found that the two books, apart from their titles and covers, are IDENTICAL.

I hate it when publishers do this. Amazon! Sort them out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great author but confusing number of titles 14 Sep 2008
Format:Hardcover
Mr Slater's books on Heraldry are richly illustrated in colour (befitting the subject) and are very readable and descriptive. They really bring the subject to life.
One issue I have however is that he has published a number of books on the same subject and it is very difficult to identify which one to purchase (hence the four star rating). I have seen at least four different but similar titles (my comments above are based on the first listed): `The Illustrated Book of Heraldry: An International History of Heraldry and its Contemporary Uses', `Heraldry Today: The Ancient Art and its Modern Applications' (also known by the title `Living Heraldry'), `The Complete Book of Heraldry: An International History of Heraldry and its Contemporary Uses' and `The World Encyclopedia of Flags and Heraldry: An International History of Heraldry and Its Contemporary Uses'. All are published in the last few years and there may be others - things are further complicated by the fact that the same book can have different ISBNs (that's the case with mine anyway).

4.0 out of 5 stars Heraldry and more... 26 Feb 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a very informative book, not only with regards the details of heraldry and, indeed, the quite unique language, but also because of the historical background right up to present-day scope and involvement. There is a tendency to think of heraldry as something of the past, associated with knights in armour and the like, whereas it is, in fact, very much a living thing with a place in the 21st century.

I would have liked to have seen more typical examples and descriptions, but that said, it is a very informative book, and ideal for anyone (like myself) new to the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Excellent Value 18 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is the first book that I have bought by this author, so I do not have the same grumble as the other reviewers.

That having been said, this is a jolly interesting book, reproduced in full colour, and is in hardback. How can you go wrong at this price?

5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with Information 11 July 2013
By Michael Baker - Published on Amazon.com

I ordered a couple of books on heraldry, and this is by far the best. It's not all that large, but it's incredibly dense—small print and TONS of illustrations. Great coffee table book; a joy to pick up and thumb through.

This is a great book that covers the history of heraldry and it's uses in the modern world. This is the best book of it's type that I have seen thus far and would recommend it to anyone interested in heraldry.
