not more of the same...,
By M. Bhangal "S" (Somewhere in Northern England) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: IL2 Sturmovik: The Forgotten Battles (PC) (Video Game)
Apart from the reviewers that have reservations about the German machines being underated, I have heard no-one who has a bad thing to say about this game. This is simply the ultimate combat flight-sim at the moment, full stop. The only real issue to consider is whether it is worth the upgrade from the original IL2. It's easy to say that this and the last version are very similar... until you play forgotten battles. The keyword is not 'better graphics' here (although that plays a part) but 'better AI'. The level of intelligence of all the planes, plus changes to the flight model mean that it is now possible to fly *as a squad*. This is especially important with the Russian side, where you will often find yourself against superior planes... if your wingman or senior squad pilots die, the chances of you making it back become much less. Also new are the actual tactics themselves - at first I couldnt work out why my squad flew the way they did when approaching an enemy - they dont go straight for the enemy. IT took me a few goes to work out that they were actually *thinking* - they were trying to gain a height advantage (if they could) before committing to the main dogfight! Perhaps the most impressive thing is the way you and your wingman operate as a team - in the original game, it was almost impossible to keep up with your wing leader, but in this game it is, and this makes a real difference: the squad based tactics that this allows really lift the game. Theres loads of little tweaks that make this possible (some more obvious, like the fact that your own squad dont try to shoot the enemy if you are in the way, but others less blatent, such as the fact that your squad seems to pay more time in making sure every plane gets home, rather than just 'shooting down lots of enemy planes' - they will break off and help you much quicker, and this builds a real sense of cameraderie). I can't see any other combat flight sim even coming *close* for a couple of years - this game is practically a genre in its own right at the moment! What more can I say, other than to say there is a Battle of Britain upgrade planned, and the fact that there have been a couple of game updates in the recent past (which may fix some of the more negative comments from earlier reviewers). For those who dont have the original game, theres only this to say: There's a lot of WW2 games out there, all of which seem to have a dedication to the men and women who lost their lives in the war. How a mindless third person shooter can be a dedication to anything escapes me... more of an insult. IL2 on the other hand doesnt tackle this issue with a cheesy one liner dedication. It does it by actually creating the atmoshpere of the time, and make you get a sense of what it was like. It makes you realize how underpowered and fragile the aircraft really were, and how claustrophobic a cockpit was. You really get the impression of your aircraft being something that smells of aviation fuel and belches smoke, rather than a sleek fighting machine. Most of all, it makes you realise how short live really was (particulalry if you choose the IL2!) Not many games have the level of detail and obvious dedication from the design team to transend technical details, and instead make you have an emotional reaction. This one does. S

Gorgeous,
This review is from: IL2 Sturmovik: The Forgotten Battles (PC) (Video Game)
I have to admit that I'm a flight sim novice that only really dips his toe into these sorts of games. However I bought the first game and now, having got a system that will run this have bought this one. This game takes place on the eastern front of World War 2 where you can take command of a huge variety of planes from the various warring powers. This is not only from the USSR and Germany but also Hungary, Finland and the USA (to do with battles in 1945 I think). Players can command fighters or bombers on a variety of tasks from ground attack, escort duties or air to air combat. This can be on single missions, campaigns or online gaming. The first thing that strikes me is the enormous depth of the game in it's realism, research and most strikingly of all the downright beautiful graphics. Admittedly I'm running this on a 2.8 ghz processor, 512 Megs memory and a 64mbs graphics card so I am able to ramp up the detail but believe me it's worth it. As for the gameplay, it's superb with wheeling dogfights and low level chases against the enemy. Various modes such as the campaign side have been revamped from il2 to increase the lifetime of the game and you definately get the feeling that you're really taking part in things. This is one of the games that you do need to work on but I think it'll be well worth it on the enjoyment side of things.

IL-2 Just Got Better!,
By P.T. "flyerpete" (Lincolnshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: IL2 Sturmovik: The Forgotten Battles (PC) (Video Game)
Having played and played and played the original IL-2 I really doubted that any more could be done to make the game better. Then I bought Forgotten Battles. This really is the greatest World War Two flight sim on the market and when compared to expensive, disappointing Microsoft products, is great value. The aircraft are modelled fantastically and realistically, all having their own quirks and peculiarities which tie-in perfectly with what the reference books say, the landscapes are still stunning, likewise the vehicles and the ships and the buildings and the clouds and the airfields and the water textures... However, don't spend too long staring at them in wonder because the artificial intelligence of the enemy aircraft is pretty hot too! If you are unfortunate enough to get shot down (and you will be sometimes) take a look at the damage modelling of the aircraft as you tumble towards the earth spewing realistic looking fire and fragments of aeroplane, it has to be seen to be believed! I really can't fault this simulator, it looks great, handles great, runs great, sounds great, there are a stack of different aeroplanes to fly, some peculiar, some a little more familiar. If you want even more bang for your buck, IL-2 AND Forgotten Battles are very well supported on the net and there are plenty of free downloads for Forgotten Battles that add up to make this the best there is. Like the original IL-2 this is not an easy simulator to fly but it is so immersive that you won't notice the learning curve and every crash will be followed by an instant desire to be back in the air and getting it right. Get hold of the 'Operation Barbarrossa' add-on (now specially edited to run on both IL-2 and Forgotten Battles) and you'll forget what the world outside your computer room looks like for a week or so! For anybody who harboured childhood dreams of strapping themselves into a twelve-hundred horsepower piston engined fighter and blasting off into the blue yonder, this really is the simulator for you. I'd have bought this even if it had meant selling my immediate family to the slave trade!!
