This little gem features Max Brennan better known for his work on the Holistic label as Fretless AZM,and in collaboration with percussionist Rupert Brown as Universal Being.
For this, the second under the Maxwell House alias Brennan again calls on the help of his fellow Isle Of Wight chums Paul Butler/Tom Vernon and Darren Ford, but it is really again Max Brennan plus...
The recording opens with what Brennan has described as his personal favourite composition "Arena Of The Odd". It features a rolling bassline and chirpy trumpet, but for my money the best is yet to come.
Second track in "Stuck Up Pilons" has a wonderfully catchy rhythm underpinned by some lovely spikey acoustic guitar work by Tom Vernon.
The wild synth passage towards the end will pierce your eardrums if played too loud and will not be to everybody's taste.
Track 8 "Tony's Phones" is for me just awesome, and this time features the relatively unknown talents of Darren Ford on guitar. It begins with literally the sound of someone dialling an old fashion bakelite phone with a rolling bass and trumpet track driving the beat forward. But what happens as the track develops sends shivers down my back everytime I hear it, as the music subsides and someone plays what sounds like a sitar,Ford comes in with some exquisite guitar work which I never tire of hearing.
This is innovative, creative, extraordinary music which is nigh on impossible to categorise, but quite clearly there is a scene on the Isle Of Wight which is producing some awesome music.
Check out the Holistic back catalogue and basically anything you can find with Max Brennan on it. You will not be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maxwell House - Maxwell House 24 Feb 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Another day, another Max Brennan alias. This time, it's Maxwell House, and his eponymous debut goes in more of a house direction, but still with that crazed jazz that made his name(s). "Sparticas" alternates between crazed freneticism and mysterious downtempo. "River Karnack" is more strictly downtempo, while "Brogal Frets" has some bass strums that give it a warm pulse. "Hilton Box" has that funk which we crave so much. Overall, Maxwell House is reminiscent of his work as Fretless AZM, but it has its own unique qualities as well -- but for purposes of comparison, it rates a middling Fretless AZM album.
