5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to domestic installations, 18 Nov 2005
This review is from: IEE on Site Guide (BS 7671: 2001 16th Edition Wiring Regulations Including Amendment 2: 2002) (Iee Wiring Regulations Brown) (Spiral-bound)
For a non-electrician, at first sight this book is quite impenetrable, being a set of tables, diagrams, and specialised notation (Zs,In,R1...) that makes little sense until you understand the language. However, when you delve deeper, and read individual sections, the language begins to make sense. If you already know how to wire a fused connection unit and are willing to learn more, then this will take you to a *reasonable* (albeit not comprehensive) understanding of how a domestic system works, and the requirements of BS7671.

Particular sections of interest are the diagrams on earthing systems, how to use specialised test equipment and how to downrate cable for use in conduit, insulation, or other current limiting situations. There are plenty of diagrams to illustrate different situations.

This isn't, as said before, a comprehensive guide, and it does require supplementary knowledge acquired from experience/other reading, but as a handy reference for design and test, it is invaluable. A great on site guide.

Well this is the fount of all knowledge relating to electrical installation to BS7671 and if you are doing an electrical course then this will allow you to revise so much easier than using the college books and not having the book to refer to whilst at home. You'll also need a copy to show the inspector for 'Part P' registration, that is if you can't borrow a mates copy.

Just keep in mind 17th Edition is rumoured to be out the 3rd quarter of 2007 so if you can wait, it may save you to keep the cash and use it to pay for another update course you'll need.

If you are engaging on any sort of electrical work this is a must have book, as the title suggests it is a very useful book when you are on site and if you just want to check something quick. Having said this remember the 17th Edition is out next year.
