Flagstad recorded two complete operas for EMI: Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Her other recordings for them were songs, scenes and arias. Although this box contains most of the latter that Flagstad recorded for EMI there are some unfortunate omissions. Absent are: Isolde's Narrative and Curse with Elizabeth Höngen and Issay Dobrowen, the Love Duet from the same opera with Set Svanholm and Karl Böhm, the Liebestod with Dobrowen and Brahms' Two Songs for voice and viola with Gerald Moore and William Primrose. Instead, we get an entire CD of excerpts from the complete Tristan und Isolde - a recording most buyers of this set will already have. Most disappointing. The three missing Tristan selections can be found on two other Flagstad releases (Testament and EMI), but I have yet to find the Brahms (except on LP). One bright spot, however: we have here the complete final scene from Wagner's Siegfried instead of only the final third of it as found on all previous Flagstad CD releases.
As interesting as the baroque and classical selections are I would gladly sacrifice them for the missing Wagner. Better yet - instead of the excerpts from the complete Tristan, substitute the earlier Wagner recordings (plus the Brahms!).
